2. The Shining (1980)
3. Hereditary (2018)
4. The Exorcist (1973)
5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

I saw Halloween for the first time on cable, on Halloween night, when I was about 10. Dad had told me stories about when he’d seen it in college and how much it scared everyone. I admit the buildup by him probably influenced my undying love for that movie. For a while after seeing that I couldn’t go outside at night. If I had to take the garbage to the curb in the dark I could always swear that Michael Myers was somewhere on my street.

Pulse (2001)
The VVitch (2015)
The Thing (1982)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Won't say that these are my definitive 5 favorite horror movies, and they might not fit a traditional idea of "scary", but these 5 create a discomfort and unease while watching that few others can match.

The only thing it did was make me dizzy in the theater.

I’m not big on horror movies so I haven’t seen most of them.

But I watched Cujo when I was like five. So it ranks high for me. Don’t let your five year olds watch Cujo.

Fuuuuck that

If you are between the ages of 54 and 46, Jaws fricked you up for water. Not just oceans, nut pools, baths, etc....

Bull. shite.

Jaws itself isn’t a “scary” movie, in terms of horror. But that movie made me terrified of what is in the water. When I was a kid I would freak the frick out if I swam in a pool at night because in the back of my mind a shark could get me, even knowing I was in a pool.

Jaws is scary as frick if you think about a giant shark that wants to get at you in the ocean.

Love that movie. Everything about it is chilling. If I had to make a recent top horror movie list it would have The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar, and The Dark and the Wicked

Bingo. Was at a friends house. Scared as shite to swim in that pool at night that was about 1981

Jaws really did have a big effect on folks.

Why was this movie scary? I always see it listed as terrifying and/or fricked up, but I saw it a couple months back and didn’t find it special.

This is a very societal context inquiry (as things scary to older audiences are played out or seem cheesy to the next generation). As far as scariest and being regarded as "scary" for their time:

1. Halloween
2. The Town That Dreaded Sundown/Texas Chainsaw Massacre tied for 2.
3. Saw
4. Nosferatu (threw that in for the older baws).
5. Blair Witch Project
