I don't think an actor necessarily has to act like a character off-screen to be considered born for a role. Or even look like it depending on what kind of work the actor/actress has done in their career pre-role (they're transformation on screen could be the basis for it). Or even be limited to one role. For example, Daniel Day Lewis because of his abilities I can see being "born to play" a couple different roles that he has. Maybe Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, and etc.

The guy who played Patton is the ideal "born to play" a certain role.

This may be contentious because he's done well in numerous roles, but in my estimation this was his best and I can't imagine anyone else stepping into that role and doing it with the same degree of skill.
