well, to be fair, it's different. supposedly in the UK, another brit can tell (1) where you're from and (2) your social class after 5-10 seconds of speaking. we don't have that in America. gaining that full proficiency of the region/class is probably impossible
however, I think it's fairly easy to tell what region of the country you are from, except for certain regions in the pacific northwest where it almost seems completely nonregional

Nonsense. We may have slightly less class basis to our accents but we do pick up on other American's standings by their accents about as quickly as Brits do.
