Seriously, movies like Quantum of Solace, The Dark Knight, Borat or Hamlet 2...It seems as though the Academy is only interested in "classy" films, which I understand to a point. I fell like Heath Ledger was only nominated because he is dead, which sucks because his performance is more than worthy.
Ah, I totally agree. Genre films are considered less worthy for some reason. For instance, Airplane came out in 1980. Know what won that year? Ordinary People. There's no way in hell they would have considered Airplane for any major awards, but which one has stood the test of time? I think most people can still enjoy Airplane; it's actually still insanely funny nearly 30 years later. Does anyone even remember Ordinary People? I've seen it and it's almost as exciting as it's title. The examples are endless.
I gotta say though, for some reason I have to see the oscars every year, and I generally can't stand awards shows.

Im a big fan too, although I must say I enjoyed the Golden Globes this year. I wonder if the quality will take a hit with the new format. Huge Ackman cant tell a joke so they changed the game up.

Unfortunately, every movie you listed sucked balls. And some are up for the Razzies for the worst movie. I have no problem with genre movies (in fact, I think Iron Man should've nabbed some nominations for Actor and Director), but if that's your list of movies that will be remembered well, God, I hope not.
The Oscars have long honored middle of the road Establsihment pictures. That's what it does. It's a device to get people to see their prestige pictures. Ordinary People, while I hate it since I hate almost everything by Woody Allen, actually is considered a classic. You might not like it, but it certainly is well-remembered.
But let's choose 25 years ago: 1983 Oscars. Gandhi won, which now seems a bit overrated, but it is a remembered movie. the other nominees were Tootsie, the Verdict, the Missing, and ET. Other than the Missing, all are very well-remembered. good job Oscars. what did they overlook?
Blade Runner (which is now overrated), First Blood, the Thing, Fast Times at Ridgemont High... genre movies. So the basic point is correct, genre movies get screwed, but the othe rpart of the point, that prestige pictures aren't well-remembered is false. but genre pictures already have their awards: its called the box office.

The fact Ledger died is not the reason I thought his performance was so great. It is definitely going to be one of the best remembered villains of all time just because of his performance. I know the movie was called Batman, but he is basically a main character in the film IMO.
The only big movie I saw that got nominated outside of Dark Knight was Button. I thought it was pretty good, but it wasn't this ridiculously awesome film. I didn't think Pitt was spectacular either, but just my opinion. I will eventually see most of these films I am sure, but they definitely give more praise to movies that people are less likely to go see in the movie theaters. I also think a good bit of the movies suck when I go back and watch them.

Clint Eastwood >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Frank Langella.

Ordinary People is a Robert Redford movie, and it is also considered one of the worst films to ever win Best Picture. I can't think of too many people who would consider it a "classic".

WTF?
Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie were pretty good parodies, but probably in the lower half of movies released in their respective years. The rest were some of the worst things ever put on screen.

Man, Eastwood got ripped off. Gran Torino was excellent.

saw most of the nominated movies. Best Actress should be Anne Hathaway for Rachel getting married. Wow man she went out of the box on that one. Streep close second for Doubt. Actor will be between Rourke and Penn for MILK. Nod to Rourke. Best movie was by far Slum Dog Millionare. Button was just too long and pointless. Pitt was great though. Supporting actress should be Viola Davis for doubt. yes it was short but very good. sup. actor is a given to Heath Ledger. He should have won even if alive.

Shakespeare in Love---to me, that is the worst movie to win Best Picture.

I've seen Buttons, Slumdog, Gran Torino, The Wrestler, and Frost/Nixon all in the past 3 days.(buddy gave me a DVD with all of them on it) Micky Rourke was phenomenal and I thought Skeletor was really good in Frost/Nixon. Slumdog was the best movie of the group with Buttons next and Gran Torino 3rd IMO (I really liked Clints performance. I think what hurt this movie is the other actors were fairly weak). The Wrestler made my wife cry so she gives it a thumbs up. I thought Buttons was too long but good. The last 30 minutes of Frost/Nixon was very good IMO.
I have not seen MILK or the Reader. I hate Sean Penn, I don't know why I think it has to be his comments to Chris Rock that year about Jude Law (shite lighten up Francis) I hope he never whens another award pompous douche.

FWIW the director (or maybe screenwriter) of Buttons had his fortune invested with Madoff .. what a bummer

Clint Eastwood is conservative...a definite NONO in LiberalWood...Gran Torino was great

Clint has gotten plenty of love from the Academy over the years so I can't really agree with that opinion.
Anyone want to take a stab at some Oscar upsets?
How about Langella for best actor?
Benjamin Button only wins like 3 Oscars and none of the big ones.

Here are my thoughts on the Oscar nominations and my pics if anyone is interested.
In Best Actor catagory I was thrilled to see Richard Jenkins made the nomination list. I sure hope Jenkins gets the Oscar but being he is up against such a list of accomplished actors I feel the nomination will unfortunately be all he gets. I am worried that the movie that is leading the nominations is the film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons" and because of that Brad Pitt might get the Oscar for best actor. I stand strong in my opinions that the Academy isn't ready to accept Mickey Rourke just yet and the nomination is a small gesture on their part but as for obtaining the actual Oscar I don't think he will get it.I hope for Mikey Rourke's sake the Academy does recognize him but I have a feeling they won't just yet, but I could be wrong it is just my opinion. I think the Academy is thinking the choice is really between Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and of course Mickey Rourke but as I stated previously I feel Rourke will be eliminated due to the fact he needs to prove himself for a few years as did Sean Penn and others. If it is between Sean Penn and Brad Pitt I hope Sean Penn gets it as he expanded his boundaries to portray a gay character. Even if it was a biopic and he had a real person to refer back too it was still a controversial character to portray. As for Brad Pitt all he did was wear makeup and use special effects and be himself so I don't feel the special effects or makeup enhanced his acting any. Anyone can put on makeup and act old and then gradually become themselves. I think it was a "special effects" type movie not a magnificent over the top acting role such as with Sean Penn's Milk character.
In the Supporting Male role I think it is a given that Heath Ledger will take the Oscar and to be honest from what I have heard he truly does deserve it. It is a shame that if he were alive I think he would have only gotten a nomination due to the type of film that he was in but maybe for once that will be overlooked due to his untimely and unfortunate death and all the media attention his performance has gotten over the last several months. I will be shocked if he doesn't get it.
In the Best Actress category I know the Academy loves Meryl Streep but after seeing the Golden Globes be so generous to Kate Winslet I feel this might be her year. I feel she has proven herself over and over with nominations but never obtaining the final prize and maybe with her consistent recognizable accomplishments in the past and with two wonderful performances this year it will be enough for her to take home the Oscar. I sure hope so anyway.
In the Best Supporting Actress category I was hoping to see Kate Winslet's name again so in case she didn't receive the Best Actress award she would have another chance at this category but alas it wasn't so. Here is where I think the Academy with all its nominations for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons" might play out as they give the Oscar to Taraji P. Henson. I don't think they take Penelope Cruz seriously even though she was also nominated a couple of years ago I think it is no more than a gesture in her case. I can't stand her acting and I don't understand how she even got the nomination in the first place. I think the two actresses from the movie "Doubt" will eliminate each other. And the fact that Marisa Tomei hasn't won in years if Taraji P. Henson doesn't get it she stands the next best chance. So I think it is between those two Marisa Tomei and Taraji P. Henson.
As with most people I think Wall-E will get animated film of the year and it is a shame it wasn't nominated for Best Film period. I think this film is a sure pick.
Even with all the nominations for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons" I still think "Slumdog Millionaire" will get director and best picture. If not then it is just another way Hollywood plays up to precious Brad Pitt and I will be so disappointed.
As for Cinematography, sound mixing, make up and costumes etc. the movies mentioned could be a toss up and I never guess well with those categories anyway. I was disappointed that "Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father" wasn't nominated for documentary as I really did like that and felt it was done fairly well. It wasn't a four star film but then again documentaries usually aren't my cup of tea. But as far as documentaries go I did enjoy it and I thought it deserved at least a nomination.
Anyway that is my two cents about it.
