Didn't you just graduate from college in the last 3 or 4 years? You couldn't have been more than 5 years old at the very end of the 80s so how would you

Yep, cause when 1990 rolled around songs from the 80's were outlawed and never played again.

I realize that but that doesn't answer my question. You said "the 80s were a terrible time" which is more a commentary on the times as opposed to the music. I'm just curious of how much of the decade you really experienced to make such a strong statement. That's all.

I was talking about the music. And I was born in 86.

I downloaded the Billboard top 100 from every year of the 80's. It is awesome after you get past the top 10 of each year.

Aside from anything Dave Grohl touched in the 90's or Green Day, what was great about 90's music?

Metallica? Nirvana? Tool? GnR? STP? Soundgarden? Alice in Chains?

So when you have seen a couple of pics of a hot chick, that is all you need the rest of your life?

I like always looking at hot chicks, all the time.

On paper, on TV, in Movies, at bars, on cruises, at grocery stores, etc...

I never get tired of looking at hot chicks, never!

Happy belated B'day btw (just noticed your June 11 B'day).

There was certainly some bad music in the 80s (especially 99% of hair metal) but the decade as a whole had WAY WAY better pop (alternative rock, rock, country, metal, rap, and R&B) music than anything from the late 90s on. The early half of the 90s was still pretty strong but after that this dance/techno/hip hop/rap/boy band/girl band crap began to dominate popular music shortly after that. The main difference in when you grew up vs those that grew up in the 80s is that you have to dig through the internet to find good music because literally 95% of popular music is unlistenably bad. We did that too growing up (finding good off the radar music) but we also had TONS of good mainstream pop music on the radion not to mention the classics from the 60s and 70s as well. 95% of "pop" music produced from about 1999 on has been complete garbage. Thankfully you have the internet now where you can go back and find all the good music.

There are a number of musicals I really like, but watching the TV show "Smash", there were times I thought, "Damn, this is the gayest thing I've ever seen". Then I connected the dots to "Dancing With The Stars", which elicits the same reaction. The common factor is the dancing. The musicals I like have very little dancing. It's the dancing that's gay.

Metallica? - just as good in the 80s as 90s Nirvana? - Great band Tool? - meh GnR? - Best run (and best 2 albums for that matter) was from 1987-1991 so not sure they are necessarily a "90s" band. STP? Soundgarden? Alice in Chains? - All good bands

These were good bands but you could literally name TEN times as many 80s bands across various genres that are every bit as good

Ok, not all 80s music sucked. The Talking Heads are amazing. All the music from that movie sucks.

80's hair bands took "soul" out of rock and roll. Instead of playing and writing songs with their emotions, political or social issues in mind, they curtailed their sound to agree with music videos. Not knocking them for that. MTV was the media outlet of the day and they were doing what they needed to do to sell records. It just turned almost every artist or song into gentric 3 minute mindless entertainment.

Say what you want about grunge or indie rock that followed, but you can not say that this type of music at least makes you think about the lyrics and what the artist is trying to relay tho the listener.

Oh, and this movie looks horrible.

Fair enough. The vast majority of the setlist from this movie would be way way down on my list of good songs. I'm not a big fan of many of them.

My main point to you was that it's hard for someone your age to appreciate the breadth of music from the 80s. Without dating myself too much, I have about the same perspective age wise with the 70s that you do with the 80s. All I remember from the 70s was was mostly limited to my mom's ABBA and Bee Gees records. Therefore, I thought the 70s as a whole sucked musically because most of what I knew was the disco era. It wasn't until I was older that I realized how much good stuff actually came out of the decade. If you have XM radio, listen to the "1st Wave" and 80s channel and you'll get a better feel for the music.

Not saying the 90s was better than 80s, just responding to the post that said there was no good music/rock bands in the 90s aside from Green Day (lulz) and David Grohl. That's a bit much.

True, especially with some of the terrible hair metal the decade produced. Having said that, overall one of the refreshing things about popular 80s music is that is WASN'T overtly political. I frankly get tired of the cynicism of overlty political messages in music and the 80s were refreshing in that other less cynical topics were expressed instead. There were still political songs but the message wasn't so in your face and obnoxious. It made sense for music to be highly political in the 60s and early 70s but less so from the 80s on imho. I also appreciate the 80s in that I think the decade was essentially a 2nd "British invasion" with all the really good new wave and alternative music the Brits produced in the decade.
