It all depends on the level of "remake"...

classic or great novels are ok to inspire multiple movies, in my opinion.

Milestone or seminal movies already inspire tons of imitation (or used to, before the straight-up remakes began showing up).

The biggest issue would be to nail the correct tone. Jaws wasn't a cheesy horror flick, neither was The Exorcist. They were well-crafted and acted movies, where if the cast and setting were intact and the story was just a drama, would still be interesting.
