This show is amazing!
Episode one was incredibly good. I think episode two topped it.

Likewise ... he has a good narrative arc within just that episode.
I also loved the general who says “I’ll do it myself.”

still men and women took actions that they knew would cost them their lives to save the lives of worthless communist wives, children and other family and friends and yes even strangers
can you not recognize individual heroic actions despite the political, religious, or other views of the actors?
Very well said. The Soviet state was an abomination but that didn’t mean the Russian people were short on bravery and heroism. The “liquidators” were some of the bravest men to have ever lived. Most knew damn well that they wouldn’t survive but they did it to save their families, and to a lesser degree, their country. I think ep 2 also showed the side of Gorbachev that led to him being such a great leader. He had his issues in Afghanistan, but he also showed the side of the leader who ultimately pulled the plug on Communism.

Hey, it's that guy whose best attempt at humor is posting a goatse pic.

So not to make this too political, but the Minsk “leader” who used to work in a shoe factory and become someone that powerful... kind of reminded me of AOC.

Gorbachev didn’t shirk from making hard choices. He was trying to save the USSR though, and he would have pursued a more conservative course if he knew what his reforms would lead to.
The USSR ultimately fell apart because nationalists exploited his refusal to crack down.

They’ve been sticking relatively close to the truth and timeline and they’ve even been open about the changes when the producers talk after the episode.
1) The helicopter
- it didn’t happen that soon after the accident and it wasn’t the first. It also happened because it got too close to one of the 3 broken cranes still up around the site
2) the female physicist
- she’s fictional and meant to represent the 100s of scientists who played a role in the disaster aftermath
No one should really complain about these two. Both are understandable and pretty minor. It makes you appreciate everything else that’s the truth when they’re this forthcoming about what’s not.

Episode 2 was more focused and better than the first. Some of that was probably getting past the oddity of hearing and seeing British actors as Soviets.
The ending was chilling. The recruitment scene just before that was outstanding. So was the helicopter flight and aftermath, with Shcherbina and Legasov going from adversaries to allies.

Sixteen communist wives
Thirty-two hardened deadened tiny eyes
Staring at the radioactive tan
Of thirty-two clenching wrinkled little hands
Seventeen company men
Out of which only twelve will make it back again
Sergeant sent a letter to five Ukranian wives
whose tears drip down from ten little eyes
Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause the Soviet Union can, and the Soviet Union can't say no
And the Soviet Union does, if the Soviet Union says it's so
It's so
