Having worked with John Hughes alot, maybe he knew that if he didn't put a timeline on it, he would get dragged out and feel like he was wasting time.
Steve Martin complained that the script for Planes, Trains and Automobiles was way too long and later claimed that the first cut of the film was 4 and a half hours long.
IN THE ORIGINAL ENDING, DEL FOLLOWED NEAL ALL THE WAY HOME.
Hughes decided during the editing process that instead, John Candy’s character would be “a noble person” and finally take the hint from Martin’s character, and let Neal return home alone, before Neal has a change of heart and finds Del again.

Saw Great Outdoors for the first time like 5 years ago. It was kind of late but when Dan Aykroyd said he had to introduce Mr. Thickdick to Mr. Urinal Cake I lost my shite and woke up the house laughing.

I love Aykroyd in The Great Outdoors. I haven't watched it in years, gonna have to change that soon

John Candy was definitely one of the best. I can’t believe it’s been twenty-five freakin’ years.

John Candy's great gift was his phrasing. He could make normal lines seem hysterically funny just by his cadence. On the page, this is a fairly normal exchange. In the movie, it's one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

Neal: What do you think the temperature is?
Del: One.

Not to threadjack (Candy was a fricking treasure), but Aykroyd in Dragnet is still one of my favorite comedic/weird/homage performances ever.

I have seen it many many years ago but I have no memory of it whatsoever

Only The Lonely is an overlooked gem. He nailed the role and made the viewer really pull for this likeable shy guy.

Cool story about that movie. Candy was the star and had a really nice trailer but Maureen O'hara did not. Candy went to them and told them they need to get her a better trailer because she is Maureen freaking O'Hara. They told him that they didnt have the money for that..so he gave her his trailer and took hers. Suddenly they had money to get him a better trailer.
I cant find the quote right now but she loved Candy and said something like he was one of her favorite leading men that she ever worked with.
