Anything worth watching outside of Ford vs Ferrari?
Posted on 12/3/19 at 2:20 pm to Mahootney
Jewel looks pretty good. And the Adam Sandler movie.
Posted on 12/3/19 at 2:25 pm to boxcarbarney
the Safdie Brothers movie starring Adam Sandler is more like it .... will be one of the best of the year.
Parasite was excellent and is still sticking with me a month later. Need to see it again in the theater.
Looking forward to the Richard Jewell film as well.
Oscar best pics are likely: Once Upon a Time, Parasite, The Irishman, F vs F, Uncut Gems

Glad Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is getting love but no Joker, no care.
Posted on 12/3/19 at 7:26 pm to Parmen
NBR is a critic organization. Critics were very mixed on Joker. Some of them called it a masterpiece while others called it dangerous. I feel like you'll see more love for Joker when Golden Globe nominations are announced next week.

It was talked about a lot in the reaction thread that some of us expected the movie to essentially be blackballed by hollywood’s elite. People tried to downplay that possibility, but I really think it happens.

NBR is a board of critics. Critics are, by definition, not Hollywood elite. This group is, however, conservative. The only surprise best film winner this decade was A Most Violent Year in 2014. Multiple awards to Uncut Gems is about as outside-the-box as you're going to see from them.
They also left out other likely awards contenders A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Little Women, and Bombshell (possibly, not much word on this one yet). Do you think those were blackballed by the "elite"?

No, but there is no reason to blackball them. There is, however, a reason to do so with Joker when it comes to critics or the elite in that town.
To act like it’s completely out of the realm of possibility would be dumb. I hope it doesn’t happen and will be glad if it doesn’t.

What is the reason? Popular films end up on these lists quite often. Comic book/super hero films don't.

If you know anything about the Joker and it’s release then you already know this answer.

You're right. It's an outlier.

This is a dick answer, and I didn't ask a dick question. I am not familiar with whatever scenario you're referring to. I am aware that Joker was well-reviewed by most critics, and was largely divisive on Twitter. Joker won one of the world's most prestigious film festivals and many critics and prognosticators are predicting Phoenix will not just be nominated, but win the Oscar. I thought the noise surrounding its release went away once people saw it and realized it was just a movie.
If you're refusing to outright say but are implying a dichotomy by contrasting Joker with Black Panther, I definitely don't agree with it. Joker is not some incel right wing movie that Twitter idiots say it is. It's also not some subversive anti-leftist attitude movement that other Twitter idiots say it is. It's a mostly silly comic book movie, with a good performance at its center, that has a muddled enough message that people can project what they want onto it. And Black Panther is not the SJW race-conscious film Twitter idiots praise/condemn it to be. It's a mostly silly comic book movie set in an African kingdom that otherwise looks like and plays out like other Marvel movies. Notably, Black Panther was not named the best film by NBR (the very conservative pick Green Book was). These are two hugely successful movies were made successful because everyone went to see them. The vast majority of the people who made these movies so popular could not care less about their social media narratives.
I know you said you hope Joker won't be excluded. I still think you'll be seeing plenty. NBR releases their list very early. It's almost as if they're trying to predict what everyone will say is good instead of actually staking a claim. The Post was close to a critical flop, but it hadn't been released when they made it #1. No one cares about A Most Violent Year. I bet few would consider Up in the Air the best of 2009. Many consider Hugo one of Scorsese's worst films.

I was really looking forward to The Irishman. I thought it was pretty boring. I could tell he was trying to make something like Goodfellas and Casino, but the energy just wasn't there.

The reception of the film is very well documented by those who followed its release. If you legitimately didn’t know, then apologies, but I find it hard to believe because that response was never dropped by critics and political figures, especially on Social media and the news.
My mom who doesn’t know shite about movies, Hollywood or anything, tried to talk me out of seeing it in theaters
If she was aware of the ‘reputation’ it received then I think most people who actually follow Hollywood would be as well.

I agree with you 100% here. I enjoyed both movies.

I get he is getting a lot of love, because he does look really good in this movie, but him being one of the best options in a strong field for best actor this year seems pretty crazy to me.

NYCC and AFI have released their end-of-year awards. AFI's list of the best motion pictures of the year almost assuredly includes your Oscar winner for Best Picture. On average, between 5-7 of the films it awards end up getting nominated as well.
