They would, especially if they knew that that the director assumed that the role was written as a white cop. The casting director suggested Glover for the role, and Richard Donner objected that it was a white character. When the casting director pointed out that there was nothing in the script that specifically said that the character was white, Donner did some introspection and admitted that his default assumption was that all characters were white unless the script said otherwise.

More head canon for you snowflakes to cling to as justification for things no one even knew this behind the scenes stuff as the movies were just coming out. Because we just went to see the movie.

You keep trying to wish things into existence which never were and never can be. Stop trying to rewrite history.

Watch the documentary Casting By. The section on Marion Daugherty and Richard Donner. But then facts never got in the way of your previous accusations, so I doubt you'll do the legwork to prove yourself wrong.

Watch the damn movie! That's what we're talking about , not the "making of" stuff. Interesting, sure, but it has zero to do with the topics of what was made and how it was received.

And what 'facts' are you pushing here? Be specific. Your CLAIM was that pretty much anything with a black person is 'DEI', and that's objectively wrong.

So put up or STFU.

Never asked to see the YouTube video, but for YOU to back up your claims.

* And to be clear, this is a recounting of a now elderly Danny Glover, recalling what he'd HEARD, 2nd hand, who didn't witness anything for himself.

What's your POINT?

If you go to IMDb site and pull up movies released by year and scroll thru each year from early 70’s thru the 80’s, it is absolutely amazing how many great movies were released each individual year. Compared to last ten years where there is maybe 3 or 4 good movies released.

Maybe, but these were still well crafted, well acted movies. Stars still existed. Mystique still existed. Modern movies are shite. Sorry, they just are. It's not just the endless glut of CG superhero shlock, either. Comedy is practically dead. Fun in movies has been replaced with preachy social messaging or hopeless sadism. Technology has allegedly improved and budgets have skyrocketed, but most movies look like bad cartoons.

And I'll wait and see on the nostalgia. Disney has run Marvel into the ground and I think more people are sick of seeing that logo than excited for it, these days.

Yeah, Hollywood used to be something

They lost the trust of the audience, and aren't willing to earn it back

So they are just trying to make safe slop that their consultants say is sure fire.

The DEI retardation is real, it is an overcorrection to something that was a real problem. . .40+ years ago. When society has moved on, it just seems like an unnecessary cudgel striking at an imaginary foe. People feel they are the target, and they lash out.

I am even fine with some of the race and gender swaps in most cases, so I just s. . . . .

. . . .GIVE ME NORRID RADD YOU MOTHERfrickERS!!! WHAT THE frick!!!

That may be.

But go back to any one of those years in the 80's or 90's and look at the sheer volume of absolute bangers.

Don't pretend Hollywood is matching that now, and all this is nostalgia. . .because holy shite

I won't pretend that.

I do think 1989 is particularly bad year for this argument. I think almost everything in the OP's graphic is average-to-bad. Crimes and Misdemeanors and Sex, lies, and videotape were the best American movies of 1989. I might legitimately have Road House as the best hollywood-produced movie that year. Maybe The Little Mermaid.

That's why several of us are talking about nostalgia. A few of those are pretty good. A few of those are trash. Does Hollywood not make a few good films per year along with some trash every year? I'm sure some of you would say no, but most would say they do. Any argument that starts with saying "Driving Miss Daisy was such a banger" is bad one, and it's likely based on nostalgia instead of quality.

Regardless of perceived hit rate, the people raised on the movies of now will feel nostalgia for them, and will talk about them, when they're older.

There were more legit films in 89 than any year in the last 10.

Not all were blockbusters, but many were genre-changing:

Parenthood
Look Who's Talking
Honey I Shrunk The Kids
Batman
Dead Poets Society
Lean on Me
Fletcher Lives
Major League
Field of Dreams
Pet Semetary
See No Evil, Speak No Evil (RIP the goat comic movie duo)
Last Crusade
Turner & Hooch
Uncle Buck
Sex, Lies, and Videotape
Steel Magnolias
My Left Foot
All Dogs Go to Heaven
Harlem Knights
Little Mermaid
BTF2
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Cult classics like:

Gleaming the Cube
The Burbs
Bill and Ted
Baron Munchausen
Heathers
Roadhouse
Young Einstein
Weekend at Bernies
Next of Kin
The Wizard
Roger & Me
Tango & Cash

These all start to make up for Ghostbusters 2 and The Final Frontier
