It was based on the book that was intentionally written to avoid the political controversy over the attack.

to the best of my knowledge nobody is refuting anything.

Fighter jets being within range of the compound has also been refuted. Both of these were refuted in the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on the incident. The jets that were in Italy were for training and not equipped for actual fighting.
From an entertainment standpoint, I enjoyed the movie. I didn't really care for Bay's feigned outrage over people making it political. He made a movie about the hottest political story of the time, and took some artistic liberties with it, so not sure what he expected.

You talking about Aviano Air Base or NAS Sigonella?
Aviano is home to the 31st Fighter Wing....

I believe it was Aviano where Panetta(or someone) said the F-16's there weren't equipped for a military response at the time, and it would have taken 15-20 hours to get jets equipped for fighting there.
Whether that's accurate or not, I can't say. The claim earlier in the thread said nothing in the movie had been refuted, which isn't accurate. There are a few key things in the movie that have been refuted.

I don't believe that any major AFB in Europe or close to the Middle East does not have at least 1 or 2 combat ready Jets at all times.
Ramstein AFB in Germany is also one of the largest bases in the world. Those fighters could have been in Libya in less than an hour, but they were never called...
What is the point of having bases around the world if you can't deploy the assets in an emergency. Panetta lied, plain and simple.

Just looked it up, and it wasn't Panetta. It was Gen. Martin Dempsey.
Maybe they were lying, I don't know. More likely they were possibly covering their arse. But their testimony shows that there was nothing in the movie that was refuted. The movie gave the impression that the requests for air assistance were ignored.
And here's a conclusion from the House Armed Services Committee.
quote:
At a 2013 hearing, Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., pressed Gen. Martin Dempsey, then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on why the F-16s in Aviano weren’t sent to Libya. Dempsey said it would have taken up to 20 hours to get the planes ready and on their way, and he added that they would have been the “wrong tool for the job.”

A report by the House Armed Services Committee said that U.S. Air Force F-16 fighters stationed at Aviano, Italy, at the time were configured for training flights. None was on combat alert.

It's in the movie and I think it really happened in real life, too. They didnt even want the planes to fire. They just wanted them to buzz the Libyans because they know it would put the fear of God into them and they'd retreat for at least a few hours to buy more time on the ground.
Ever seen those A-10 vidoes where all they have to do is fly by that battlefield and the terrorists never fire back again??? It's the same principle and the Spec Ops/contractor guys knew it.
It was all lies. They left them hanging for dead and didn't care. It's one of the most disgusting episodes in American history.

That's horseshite.
There are two fighter squadrons there.
There was ISR on station that was armed watching everything go down.
An SF company was in Libya, C/1/10, they should have been greenlit to respond.
The SF CIF for AFRICOM should have been sent, however they were not allowed to do their fricking job: respond to crisis on the continent they are assigned to.
Mike Glover lays this out...he was the CSM of the AFRICOM CIF...move to about 2:04 on the link below.

Now you're taking my language. This man is true patriot and American hero. Also a total and complete badass.
He and all those others like him know those guys were left hanging out to die.
Everyone should watch that interview.
They knew everything that was about up go down.
If you want a possible (not saying it's true or not, we just don't know) explanation as to why the White House and Hillary told everyone to stand down, just go down the Iran/Bin Laden Raid conspiracy theory rabbit hole.
Btw, there are also USAF/military assets all throughout the islands in the Mediterranian, such as Malta, Crete, etc.

Rented it last night. Really liked it. Enough so that once it was over, I went back to watch the first 1/2 hour or so because I was a little confused as to the who is who.
