Greinke, who we ranked as the top free agent available in anticipation of this decision, is leaving three guaranteed years and $71 million behind by opting out. However, even in a free agent market with Johnny Cueto, Jordan Zimmermann, and David Price, he might be the most attractive ace available. He's going to get paid, possibly with an even larger deal than the one he signed with Los Angeles three seasons ago

I would bank on it being a larger deal.

An elite MLB pitcher has to be one of the best jobs on the planet. Throw every 5 days, get paid insane money and when you're ready to walk away from the game there's not a ton of wear and tear on your body compared to other sports.

I think there are many cases where pitchers can't feel their arm later in life.

If I've got a couple hundred million, I can either buy a bionic arm or just pay someone to do anything/everything to do what I'd need that arm to do.

Compared to football players that are killing themselves or basketball & hockey players that can't walk post retirement?

Yeah, I'd say a starting pitcher post retirement has it a lot better than most of the other high dollar athletes.

Walking away from over $23 million per year guaranteed tells you he is confident he will get a better deal. How much do you think he, and his agent, feel he is worth? There are not too many teams that can afford more than he is currently making for a longer term contract.

sure there are. He'll get a 6 or 7 year deal at about the same amount he was scheduled to make the next 3 years. Basically he wants to still be getting paid in the downside of his career
