That's because the parents today are only slightly more mature than the kids playing on the field.

I'm sure there were isolated incidents, but I don't recall this level of coach/fan anger when I played youth sports 35 years ago. That's because the adults involved didn't care enough to get angry. They weren't banking everything on their son being the next NFL, MLB, superstar. The primary focus of their week was not preparing for the 15th "world series" of the season. In fact, quite the opposite. They had jobs and other family responsibilities that were a much bigger priority. They would attend their kid's game if their schedule allowed, but they weren't foregoing greater priorities just to attend a little league game.

And the kids were perfectly ok with that because that's how it was for adult. I can remember more than a few times where my dad missed a game because he had to get yardwork done around the house, or had to work late. It was no big deal for me because in my mind that's what adults had to do. Now, my kids play ball and I'm getting text messages/emails at 6:30 am from the coach fretting over the need for additional batting practice this week ahead of the 5th "championship" tournament of the spring, or leads for private lessons...for 10 year olds.
