The difference is, we aren't relying on scrap pile guys this time. Ibanez and Chavez is a solid platoon. If we bring up young guys then they'll miss out on developing with everyday play. Its easier and better to drop to 2-mil and take a chance on 3-4 guys that have already peaked.

Whether it’s Burnett, Javier Vazquez, Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown or Kenny Rogers, the legacy of Yankee pitching saviors in the Joe Torre-and-Joe Girardi Era is indeed sordid. In those 15 years, the team has brought in 21 major-league pitchers who spent a significant portion of their time as Yankees in the starting rotation. Only three have pitched better in New York than they did in their other stops.
quote:
Sabathia’s circumstances were different than a majority of players on the list. He arrived still in his prime. Sidney Ponson, Johnson, Brown, Dwight Gooden and Key arrived toward the end of their careers. But Rogers and Denny Neagle were 31, Pavano 29, Vazquez 27 and Jeff Weaver 25. Plenty more arrived at Yankee Stadium with promising careers and left broken.
quote:
Sabathia is the best example. Since signing the richest deal ever for a pitcher in 2008, he has dropped his ERA nearly half a run from his time in Cleveland and Milwaukee. His adjusted ERA – a number that compares his ERA to the league average and factors in whether his home stadium is a hitters’ or pitchers’ park – is 140, or 40 percent better than average, compared to 120 over his first eight seasons.
The other two: David Wells, who thrived in New York, and Freddy Garcia, who has pitched one overachieving season with the Yankees. And that’s it.
Roger Clemens? His Yankees ERA, 4.01, was more than a point higher than with Boston, Toronto and Houston, and his ERA+ 47 points lower.
Mike Mussina? Better as an Oriole.
Randy Johnson? Medium Unit at best.
Even David Cone and Jimmy Key, two linchpins from the dynasty teams, were no better with the Yankees than anywhere else. Cone’s ERA swelled and his ERA+ is a smidgen lower with the Yankees. Key’s ERA was about a quarter-point higher, while his ERA+ was a tiny bit better.
Jon Lieber, Shawn Chacon, Jaret Wright, Bartolo Colon – all maintained, some at higher levels than others.
The international players haven’t faired well, either, with Orlando Hernandez’s success offset by Hideki Irabu, Kei Igawa and Jose Contreras’ struggles.

It is early, and Spring Training has a funny way of helping imagination project greatness. But the Yankees' initial impressions of the 23-year-old Pineda have been promising, and it is clear they are banking on the 6-foot-7 hurler establishing a big presence.

Aardsma signed. $500k.
I'm a fan of this.

He won't be ready until late. Wasn't a big fan when we were looking at him a couple of seasons ago but I'm always a fan of low cost guys with potential.

I know. It's a solid addition, especially if Mo does hang it up and Soriano opts out.
As long as he pitches like he did in Seattle, that is...

Couple quotes from Jeter today that I found amusing:
quote:(Calm down, he's joking)
“Well, I decided to hit left-handed this year,” he said this morning, responding to a question about going back to his old mechanics. “I’m going to try that in the first half and see if it works.”
quote:
It’s awkward. I think that’s the better way to put it, just because you’re so used to seeing someone. With Andy, he was the dumb one of the group that left and went to Houston for a few years. We sorta got used to him not being here. Jorge, probably it hasn’t hit me yet. In spring training, pitchers and catchers are on a different schedule anyway, so you really don’t see people too often. That’ll be a tough one, because as everyone knows, we were together all the time. But yeah, it is kinda weird when you’re used to playing with someone. I’ve played with these guys since I’ve been 18 years old. When they’re not there, it’s kinda awkward. But you’ve got to move on. You have no choice.”
quote:
Asked how his relationship with Posada will change now that Posada has retired, Derek Jeter turned sarcastic. “I probably won’t talk to him, probably won’t see him anymore,” Jeter said. “That’s about the end of it. No, we’re like brothers, all of us are like brothers, because we’ve had so many experiences together. I keep in touch with him all the time.”

David Aardsma was apparently at the complex today after signing yesterday. He’s wearing #34. How dare they disrespect A.J. Burnett like that! [Mark Feinsand]

Watch AJ win the NL CY Young

I'd laugh. But I wouldn't be able to be upset with Cashman for pulling off the trade. It was clear that AJ just wasn't a good fit.. and he had long enough to prove it (98 starts).

Answering one of the most pressing questions of the last week, Nick Swisher has announced he will take over the cream pie duties.
Swisher vows to deliver more cream pies than Nick Manning
Is it just me, or does he sound like a total stoner when you read that out loud?

"You know, A.J. was a good buddy of mine, and he was a good buddy of all the guys in here," Swisher said. "I'm sad to see him go, and wish him the best of luck. We're going to have to keep something going, man, because people in New York want pie! You know, let's just keep it going."

I'd like to get him black-out drunk and take advantage of his wife.

I would then take over his cream pie duties.

Speaking of Phils...I think I'm back on the "Hughes for the 5th spot" train.
