We didn't know how good we had it with those Lebron vs Warriors finals. Say what you want about those coaches and players but that kind of felt like the last time we got to see serious competitors and some intensity in the NBA. I watched those games but these days I'd have a hard time answering if you asked me who was in the last 5 NBA finals.

This is a good point. I'm not an NBA fan - I'm a casual, at best. But those were the last finals I even remember having a passing interest in the product. It holds very little appeal to me.

Conversely, I'll tune into the NHL playoffs, even though I'm a very, very casual Preds fan.

It was good until you realize they haven’t watched a game in years. They’re basically the paid version of this thread.

But the numbers were never really possible, even in arguable peak NBA eras, from Nielsen ratings to stadium capacities. It was never gonna happen. Especially now, where the game, the players & the politics are relatively repelling.

The NBA lucked out after the peak MJ era by getting China into the mix. Almost all of the growth was from China post-MJ. You can even see it in the salary growth.

Look at when Yao Ming was drafted....the Rockets even designed their logo to appeal to the Chinese market.

The owners pretty much ceeded power to the players - moreso than any CBA in pro sports and it resulted in what you would expect - they do the bare minimum.

Load management is so rampant and ridiculous it's flat out embarrassing. If your kid wants to go see his favorite player, you can't buy a ticket even a week in advance with any certainty that player may not decide he's going to sit out that game. It's sad really.

Really the power is at Nike/Adidas, etc.

The NBA is managed like AAU teams. It's a joke league, with jooke people. NBA players dress like clowns, behave like clowns, the marketing is all fake.

No one is fooled anymore. It's old, stale, and tiring.

For me it's the same - the players are unchecked and do whatever they want.

They were very well. In 20 years, the NBA was going to “take over” and be the most dominate sport…

It went the opposite direction. I used to watch and pay attention 15 years ago. I don’t think I’ve watched 5 minutes of play in the last 7 or 8 years, seriously.

I've got NHL 1.

Only league that has the majority of games on espn+

Its like MLB and NBA don't want you to watch their product

Same. Best pro league product out there.

My love for the NBA died when my once beloved Charlotte Hornets traded Zo, killing a burgeoning title contender.

Shorten season to 58 games. You play each team twice. Get rid of all conferences and divisions. Top 12 teams make playoffs. Top 4 get byes.
This eliminates essentially all resting of starters, makes the regular season infinitely more meaningful

Dominate? Probably never but NBA definitely had carved out a solid place in the public beginning with Magic and Bird era and lasting well on up through Shaq and Kobe’s Lakers.

Ever since that time it has slid back into being a largely less relevant league like it used to be on up through the 1970’s (at least in its home U.S.).

Die hard fans still know it inside/out but even casual fans could tell you what was happening in the NBA during its 80s/90s/early 00’s golden era. Casual fans don’t talk about it anymore outside of knowing who LeBron and Steph are.

The correct way to describe this is that the players realized how to use market forces to gain power outside of the CBA.

Load management is a function of the owners, not players.
