He has to be. They're barely talking. It's quiet. It's just awkward. They have nothing to talk about. It's just plain weird.

This. If he doesn't have scripted material in front of him he is lost.
He has been with ESPN from the beginning so I am sure he has a lot of stroke at the office. Probably been his lifelong dream to be a PBP guy so he used his influence to get the gig.
