I'm just casually aware of the school by name; I know they just moved up to D1 (FBS) level, going to the Sun Belt.

I noticed them in football, where they went 11-1.
Now they go 31-3 in basketball, winning the tourney and auto bid...

That's impressive, no matter the conference.

They've usually over-achieved I've felt. And in addition to sports, it's a solid university.

In football, lost to the best teams on their schedule Air Force and App State.

In basketball, even more impressive but lost twice to App State and once to So. Miss.

Still 31-3 is very impressive in basketball.

Maybe their turn to win in the Sun Belt?

My good friend Eric Sollenberger always prayed for times like this before he passed away.

They have a HUGE arse athletic budget compared to their Sunbelt peers, as their student fee for athletics is something like $2,400 a year.

Compare that with G5 programs like UTSA that are about $500/year, and UL, ULM and LA Tech that have $0/year.

Getting 20k per student for a 4 year degree for athletics is insane

It’s higher. I’m pretty sure JMU is north of $2,800 per semester.

I wouldn't brag on that

You have a school just moving up from FCS/1AA, that stepped into the Sun Belt and is laying waste to it. App State has been their only challenge thus far.

I laughed ... a little. But truth be told, it seems like they've already overtaken Vandy

I mean- 11-1 in football, and 31-3 in basketball, regardless of the schedule strength, is impressive. They moved up from a lower level, technically they're supposed to be cupcakes for the Sun Belt teams, right? Not walking in and taking over?

They have a gorgeous campus. Stayed there a few times. Nice size undergrad enrollment too. Their location is interesting geographically because Virginia always produces decent talent but they aren’t far from the DC metro, and close to parts of Ohio.

frick it. One of ULM/ULL/Tech needs to do whatever necessary to adopt this and run shite in the state (minus LSU obviously). Being ULM alum is obviously want to see us be the first to do it but if tech or ull beat us to the punch so be it. Make the other two shut down athletics.

James Madison is one of those programs that probably could have moved to FBS far earlier than they did and would have been fine.

JMU is a huge public school in a state with an exploding population.

Their baseball team beat Arkansas one game earlier in the year. That club can hit.

Well frick me. At 20k students, that’s $100 Million. USA Today is showing them at $57.8 Million, with 81% of that “allocated”.

LINK

Them and Old Dominion are the largest athletic budgets in the Belt by a pretty good margin.

We wonder why student loan debt is a thing? This is why I laughed at the cfb players are slaves bullshite before nil. Those athletes received free education, room & board, food, tutoring, plus school swag and if they went to a bowl game it is stupid.

Those regular students are the slaves. Going into debt for what? I couldn’t tell you who won the Mens basketball tournament 3 years ago off without looking it up, or who won the NC in football 7 years ago.

They need to stop giving the students the option to add the fee or not, and just add it. Students will never agree to add a fee. They don’t care about ULM athletics lol. I remember everyone called me crazy for trying to spread the word that we needed to add the fee lol. Students are just too short sighted and I don’t understand of all the fees, that’s the one where they give an option to students.

we had a vote in 2015 or 2016 i think. it was set to quietly pass until another student caught word of it and ran an A1 smear campaign a week out from the vote. it got shot down predictably. I want to say it was a couple hundred a semester. wasnt anything major.

$150 per semester would net roughly the following annual amounts based on the quick Googling of enrollment numbers.

UL: $4.8 Million added to current $33 Million budget revenues

ULM: $1.95 Million added to current $19 Million budget revenues

LA Tech: $3.6 Million added to current $28.6 Million budget revenues

Not exactly insignificant dollars for those athletic programs.
