Wouldn't it have been easier for the Big 10 to just split teams

based on geography? Just have a North and South division.

North

Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Northwestern
Penn State
Wisconsin

South

Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Nebraska
Ohio State
Purdue

I just checked all the team's winning percentages in the poll era and it's pretty similar. The North teams have a winning percentage of 57.15%. The South teams have a winning percentage of 55.27% during that same time period. The divisions are pretty evenly matched and coming up with the names for the divisions would have been a lot easier.

East/West in my opinion would have been best and kept the most natural rivalries. But whatever.

I even liked the Plains/Lakes idea. Habe all the teams near the Great Lakes in one division and the "periphery" schools in another. Always, always, ALWAYS make your divisions geographical if you can.

Yeah but the balance of power would have been ridiculously stacked in favor of the east. Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State in the same division. Forget about it. And a team like Michigan State would pretty much have zero chance of ever winning that division.

The balance of power will always change over time. Look how West-heavy the SEC was this year as opposed to 2001 when it was East-heavy.

And there will always be some teams who pretty much never win the division. Kentucky, Vandy, Ole Miss in the SEC; Baylor and OK State in the Big XII.

I keep wondering if it wouldn't be ok for the Big Ten (or any 12-team conference, for that matter) to go without divisions and just have the top two duke it out for the title.

The Big Televen has each of its teams play two permanent rivals with six rotating slots. What if there were no divisions and simply a third permanent rival added?

(Nebraska excluded, the first two schools listed after each school are the current permanent rivals; the third is my hypothetical third. I gave Nebraska Iowa since they border and have some history, and I also gave Nebraska the two newest members of the Big Ten so that the three n00bs would play every year.)

Illinois - NW - IN - PU
Indiana - PU - IL - OSU
Iowa - MN - WI - NE
Michigan - OSU - MSU - MN
Michigan State - MI - PSU - NE
Minnesota - IA - WI - MI
Nebraska - IA - PSU - MSU
Northwestern - IL - PU - WI
Ohio State - MI - PSU - IN
Penn State - OSU - MSU - NE
Purdue - IN - NW - IL
Wisconsin - IA - MN - NW

If by most teams you mean most of the teams outside of the top 25, then yeah, I guess.

That wouldn't work. Michigan and Ohio state have to be able to meet in the championship game.

Florida State and Miami have to be able to meet in the championship game.

Trying to engineer a specific championship game can make a conference look stupid.
