Shaka's results so far are pretty underwhelming and obviously Rick has built up a pretty strong program at Tennessee.

got the wrong VCU coach

BilJ I like how you switched your Texas A&M flair to another random big12 team before posting this...

Should of never of let you in, would of rather taken Baylor than you.

Would we take back a coach who only missed the Dance once in 17 seasons? Hell yeah. Firing him in the first place for losing in the first round a couple years was idiotic. Even Coach K has taken his lumps in the opening weekend.

eh maybe. they should have never gotten steve patterson imo. i feel he was more or less a scapegoat to run off all the remaining deloss dodds baws.

chris del conte is the man to bring in a new generation. he seems like a much more competent AD to joe alleva than will wade is a more competent coach to shaka smart fwiw.

Obviously in hindsight maybe they should have kept Rick Barnes, but it was time to move on. He’s a good coach but 1 Final Four in 34 years as a head coach is not getting it done.

Any school with the type of resources and championship aspirations as Texas would have made the same move.

I’m sure they would now, but the move made sense for all parties at the time. It was time for both sides to move on and Shaka was THE coach that everyone wanted.

Everyone wanted Shaka at the time.
There was even talk of him succeeding Roy at UNC when he retires.
Not so much now.

Wake Forest is going to make a run at Barnes after the season is over.

This is what happens when people put to much emphasis on 1 or 2 runs in the tourney, (see also Johnson, Trent.)

To add to the point someone mentioned Barnes “only” made 1 Final Four as “not getting it done” he also made 2 other Elite 8’s and 2 other Sweet 16s. That said it was 7 straight years of not getting to the 2nd weekend including a losing season. That’s sorta like not getting anything better than the Alamo Bowl. It was stale and time o move on, Barnes himself has said he changed after leaving Texas.
