That's an awesome accomplishment. Though it does help when you're handed the keys to a Ferrari.

Fair.

Makes it even more of an accomplishment that he's passing his mentor and tGOAT to do so.

CMR left the cupboard pretty full for Kirby.

They went 8-5 his final year.

They weren't a dumpster fire but they weren't a Ferrari by any stretch.

To be fair this period in CFB history will have an asterisk next to it. Georgia is doing this when all the college football powers have been down.

Methinks the never ending toughness of their schedule plays some part.

..and play in the SEC East and have frickers in Birmingham rescheduling your regular season games vs Bama in the name of 'bridge scheduling'.

You mean his first year? New coach, new system, new way of doing things. However, they were talented and they lost a couple of games they shouldn't have - that Tennessee game being one of them.

Georgia had recruited very well under Mark Richt and in the years preceding Kirby's arrival in 2016 they had the following records:

2011: 10-4
2012: 12-2
2013: 8-5
2014: 10-3
2015: 10-3

In 2012 they had a team good enough to win the national championship but ran into a (slightly) better Alabama team in the SEC Championship Game.

It also must be said that Georgia is likely the most underachieving program in the history of college football. Alabama has had no business being the flagship program of the Southeastern Conference for the entirety of its history. Georgia has always had the talent, the resources, and the rabid fan base to compete at the highest levels. Up until recently they have failed to reach their potential.

It’s a great accomplishment, but in fairness only really relative to the last 20 years. The amount of rent a wins today is so many more than the previous iterations of college football

For example, Vince Dooley 1980-1982non conf opponents

Tcu
Clemson x2
A&M
Georgia tech x3
Cal
Temple
Byu
Memphis

Kirby’s out of conf opponents the last 3 seasons

UT martin
Ball state
UAB x2
Oregon
Samford
Kent state
Clemson
Charleston southern
Ga tech x3
