I don't think you know what "straw man" means, because that is what you are doing here.
No one said "dominant" or "top level" for an "entire season." The adjective used was "competitive."
You're taking few outlier examples and trying to argue a rule.
Connors was ranked near a 1000 before his us open run. Can a 40+ year catch lightning and compete over a tournament sure. Just like there's fringe cases across all sports. Still doesn't mean that they can be competitive as a rule.

Tom Watson was so close to shattering that mark. Won his first tournament in 1974 at 24 years old, and lost in a playoff in 2009 for the British Open at age 60. Bogied the 72nd hole to lose his lead.
This tournament disappointed me. I was really hoping he would get that. Still not sure why he decided to putt the ball from the back of that 18th green. He always had amazing hands. Hindsight is 20/20 but you have to feel like he could have gotten a pitch inside of that putt he hit.

Jaromir Jagr is playing in his 37th season this year.

Jagr isn’t in the NHL anymore (currently plays for a team he owns in Eastern Europe), last played in 2018, which is still absolutely insane.
Jagr got drafted the same year as Keith Tkachuk and when Jagr was 45 played in a game against Keith’s son Matthew

People forget that it used to be 30 was old for a tennis player. Just because some of the GOATS are able to extend their careers into the mid to late 30 with dedication and modern medicine, it doesn't change the fact that it's a brutally physical sport.
Main reason you probably see some of the long careers that have taken place over the last 10 years is because of the rackets and string.
I doubt on wood rackets Federer and others are winning slams after 35.
After 30, you start losing some of the quickness. You could see top pros start dropping off when they got around 29.
