quote:do they have a contingency plan? One reason all these QBs are getting paid is bc there is no other viable option. You're stuck either paying this above average guy big money, or using some backup shite QB and being cash flush and shitty. The former is the better option 98% of the time
They wont Franchise Cam he is not going to get paid 16.9 million by the Panthers.

The tag right now is 16.19 Million, show me a QB that is "shitty" that makes that much?
Posted on 7/18/14 at 1:03 pm to htran90
He is not better than Romo, Manning, or Kaep. Cutler and Flacco maybe.

No team in the league has a "contingency plan" for a starter caliber qb. A large percentage of teams don't even have 1 starter caliber qb. There is no way that the panthers let Cam go, unless he just totally falls apart.
I'm not sure when his contract is up, but it will almost definitely wind up being in the neighborhood of $20m/year. That's about the going rate for starter caliber qb in the current market, and it isn't going to be trending downward anytime soon.

How many big time QBs ever actually hit free agency without unique circumstances?

Yes they will

You must have missed this earlier.
-------------------------
Shittier QBs are getting paid much more.
ETA: Kaep - 21mil, Ryan 20.75mil, Flacco 20.1mil, Cutler 18.1mil, Romo 18.0mil, Manning 16.25mil
--------------------------
None of these guys are worth these amounts, especially the top three. At least Romo's numbers could almost warrant that amount of money minus the choke factor.

He'll stay, in a year or two the Panthers are going to be goooood much to the chagrin of Saints fans
right, I'm sure ATL and Tampa Bay fans won't mind either.
I mean if the Panthers even get that good.

I am not sold on Carolina making a commitment to him and they have gotten rid of some good players.
Funny how they are letting key players go. Not sure what all that means.

Do you believe Cam will stay in Carolina, if so why? Or do you think he goes to someplace else, and why?
Well they aren't going to let him walk, so yes.

They would absolutely franchise tag Cam Newton instead of letting him walk. It would be a no brainier.
He's going to get close to $15 million next year with his rookie option. Both sides are going to want a long term contract.
$16.9 million is cheap. They guy is damn good and is the only player on that offense worth a damn

i'll take a wild guess and say it is to free up money to sign him to another deal.

They had no choice with their salary cap situation. They still only have $5 million in free cap space this season.
For comparison, they Saints have/had around $4 million

This.
Cam is in that meaty part of the curve with guys like Romo and Rivers -- he's not a great quarterback, but he's much better than the alternative, and you'd much rather stick with him than let him walk and risk becoming the post-Kelly Bills or the post-Marino Dolphins and be in QB limbo in perpetuity.
I'm no Cam or Panthers fan, but there are probably 15 or more franchises who'd love to have him over what they have right now at QB.

I wouldn't go that far. Romo and Rivers are easily top 10 QBs. They are just off the elite QBs
The only QBs better are Rodgers, Manning, Brees, and Brady

Hopefully he leaves, unless the Carolina Panthers show some type of effort to re-tool the offense. They have two overpaid, overrated running backs, an offensive line in shambles, and a load of mediocre wide receivers (at least they drafted one, but he has high bust potential). Cam Newton will likely be THE offense.
Because the previous GM put us in this hell hole, and there's nothing Gettleman can really do right now but to load up with what we can afford and try to do the best we can until there's an opportunity to let players go and ease our cap restraints
All Gettleman did so far was bring in a bunch of unwanted receivers and DBs previous season, put them in the line up with some UDFA rookies and win the NFC South
I think he knows what he's doing and will give Cam all the stuff he wants when we have the ability to do so in the next year or two

what are you talking about
we got Tolbert to sign with us offering a million less on a contract than his team at the time, Chargers, were willing to give
and we ended up with one of the best FBs in the game and a 2014 pro bowler

Yea, I don't think Tolbert's $2.3 million is hurting yall

As a Saints fan, I think Newton is an incredible talent and last year the Panthers were a true force.
However, I can honestly say they do not scare me at all this year. While the D will certainly be good again, it's hard to take seriously an offense (as a poster above noted) that has two aging RB's, almost no credible (at this time) WR threat and a suspect O line.
I'm not predicting an awful season, but I can certainly see slipping to 8-8 from winning the division last year.
