Why is scoring up so much in the NBA?

ASG scores damn near every night.

What’s going on? Just no one playing defense, or has the league engineered it?

Efficiency.

Teams aren’t shooting long twos anymore or grinding down every possession to drive into a packed paint.

This has increased pace and created more possessions.

Also they stopped the hand checking a few years back. You can't redirect players with a hand on their waist anymore.

to go with more 3s... it goes back to defense. no one likes to defend 3s well. most of the shots are completely uncontested but arent covered very well at all

It’s lower than last season.. but the trend has been going up the past several years, and it’s simply because teams are playing faster. Playing faster means more possessions per game, which means more points:

Also, there have been several years where more points have been scored by teams. Most of the 60’s, and the 70’s and 80’s were similar in scoring numbers as the past two years in the NBA, and they didn’t even have a 3-point line back then.

So no, this isn’t some new thing in the NBA that’s never happened before. The real anomaly is the 90’s and early 2000’s where the scores were much lower than they traditionally had been in the NBA.

Here are the highest scoring years in NBA history. So far, this year is only 15th on the list, sandwiched between 1964 and 1978:

Also, look at the eFG%... which two seasons are by far the highest on the list? This year and last year. Scoring is more efficient than it ever has been. And it’s not a lack of defense. It’s that teams have finally learned to take better kinds of shots. That’s lead to increased efficiency. So a higher pace, meaning more possessions, which are being utilized more efficiently is why scoring is up.

Go watch a game live and tell me those guys aren't playing defense. Defenses are stretched more now than they've ever been.

Rockets fans here do a great job. Clearly a cut above fans of other franchises when it comes to our hoops iq.

Implementation of the spread offense from college and changing the rules to benefit the offense. Can’t play as physical on defense anymore

Pace and more efficient offenses, shooting more 3s.

The college basketball fans that snub their nose at the NBA and take shots like this absolutely kill me. Please take a look at the final shot your team took in the Evansville loss.

One guy dribbles up the court playing hero ball and takes a horrific deep three (that he airballs) with 3.7 seconds left on the clock. Zero fundamentals, zero passing, zero teamwork, zero basketball IQ. But the NBA is so terrible!.
