Why is Kobe Bryant not considered 2nd or 3rd best player of all time?
Because he isnt close to it
Posted on 4/1/21 at 10:52 am to Ryan3232
Because he is not even the 2nd or 3rd best Laker.

Wilt and Kareem were elite, but lets be honest, they were outmatching. Its kind of like being fair and saying Shaq was able to do what he did because no one else around him was anywhere near his physical ability.
I don’t get your argument. Do you think the NBA is full of guys with Lebron James size and ability?

Way too much of Kobe's legacy comes from narrative driven hype. Stick him on a mid market team with an average supporting cast and he is probably not even considered top 20 all time. But he got to play in L.A. with a bunch of Hall of Famers and then died young

Because he is not even close to the third best player of all time.
It's recency bias exacerbated by his untimely death and the fact he played in the LA market.
He's a great player and all time in the top 20/15, but there are so many unbelievable players in the history of the NBA. Rings aren't everything.

Kobe was consistently in the #12-20 range until he died. Now that he’s dead (RIP) basketball casuals try to put him top 3-5.
Exactly.

The problem with Kobe is that he was never the best player in the league.
05-07 he arguably was
Only by people who don't know what the frick they're talking about. 07-08 was Kobe's MVP year and he had an objectively worse season than Lebron James. There isn't really a debate about that.
In addition to these stats, in Kobe's MVP year Lebron led Kobe in PPG, APG, RPG, and FG %. Lebron was absolutely robbed because of Kobe's media market.
Kobe has NEVER been the best player in the league. I'm sorry, but that means you can't be a top 10 player ever, much less a top 3.
So to recap, in Kobe's ONLY NBA MVP season, he was bested by Lebron in the following:
PPG
APG
RPG
FG%
PER
WS/48
OBPM
DPBM
BPM
VORP

Duncan > Kobe, easily
But he didn't play in LA, dunk cool or appear in McDonald's commercials.
And there are several other players between Kobe and MJ and LeBron.

LJ would get his arse kicked in the 80s/90s.
This is asinine.
With his build/body and "illegal defense", he would have dominated the 80's & 90's.

Right.
Hypothetically, if we had a "draft" and every player in history was in their prime, Kobe shouldn't go in the top 10, maybe not 15 either IMO.
MJ
Lebron
Shaq
are probably my top 3 picks.

Bill Lambeer, Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn, Hakeem, Charles Oakley would break LJ in half.

I would take Wilt and Kareem over Lebron and Shaq

-Inefficiency
-Too much of a gunner (though I won’t hold 2006 against him since he played with the shite Sandwich)
-poor teammate and team player until the Gasol trade (constantly bitching at and about teammates and coaches, demanding trades)
I get him being an a-hole to Shaq since Shaq’s priorities were questionable when it came to basketball and practice whereas Kobe’s work ethic was on par with MJ’s but how the Lakers’ dynamic deteriorated and ultimately disintegrated prior to the Gasol trade reflects bad on Kobe and quite frankly was his own doing, didn’t help he incurred a rape charge and threw Shaq under the bus there as well
Outside of all that nonsense, his talent definitely entails he’s top 2-3 all-time
LeBron’s talent and performance definitely entails he’s too 2-3 all-time but his performance in the clutch is a mixed bag and render some amazing box score stats hollow, MJ’s always the GOAT but I truly believe Larry Bird’s a small notch below him, dude was a frickING LEGEND, I’d put him no. 2 and can’t forget Tim Duncan.

I’d absolutely want Pippen on my team over Kobe, best 2nd banana ever who truly understood and embraced the team concept and got rewarded for it, def a top 20 player all-time
Posted on 4/1/21 at 12:55 pm to Ryan3232
Tim Duncan was the better player.
