Why is Kobe Bryant not considered 2nd or 3rd best player of all time?

Ill start by saying that MJ is #1 and Lebron is 2 or 3.

5 time champion
12 time first team all defense
18 time all star
Countless other awards i could name.

I get that there were some great big men in the game, but to do what a guard does (ill include lebron on this) at the caliber Kobe did is unreal. He literally took over games on offense and would dominate on defense. MJ has a wee bit better court awareness and is the obvious goat, but Im tired of seeing him at like #8 or whatever on all time lists. Thoughts?

Because you automatically assume that MJ is 1 and Lebron is 2.

That's 2 spots already taken up

Ugh. My point is that im willing to accept anyones argument on Lebron being #2 OR #3 of all time and that Kobe is the other of whatever anyone considers Lebron to be. I personally would say Lebron is #2 and Kobe is #3 like most would probably say with good reason, but Kobe should be top 3 all time. Aka they are slightly interchangeable at 2 and 3.

Elaborate more if I answered incorrectly.

In my book, MJ is #1. After that a case can be made for Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Magic, Bird, Duncan and Kobe. I would say after MJ there is a group who make up top 10 and Kobe is in that group

I am putting MJ @ 1. He would excel at any decade. Kobe #2. LJ would get his arse kicked in the 80s/90s.

Kobe was consistently in the #12-20 range until he died. Now that he’s dead (RIP) basketball casuals try to put him top 3-5.

Well i agree with your rankings, but thats bullshite if you think Lebron wouldnt handle the 80s and 90. He would have adapted. Also, athletes are more athletic nowadays vs the 80s. I think Lebron would dominate more in that time frame. He doesnt bullshite calls as much as james harden. Harden might have had more trouble in the 80s/90s.

but why? (With respect)

Edit: I get other players like Kareem Abdul and Wilt had better accolades than Kobe, but im asking this is in the thought of how much harder it is to be a guard dominating the game. Wilt and Kareem were elite, but lets be honest, they were outmatching. Its kind of like being fair and saying Shaq was able to do what he did because no one else around him was anywhere near his physical ability.

I’m not a Lebron fan, but this is false. Plenty of players benefit from today’s game, but James is one of those that could dominate in the ‘80’s, 90’s, whenever. He’s got the size, strength, speed, and awareness to play any position on the floor at an elite level.

Jordan has 5 MVPs to Kobe's 1. Jordan leads Kobe in points/rebounds/steals/assists/ blocks per game and FG percentage by a lot. That argument is over.

Kareem has a good argument for GOAT. Wilt does too. I think Bird and Magic are in the conversation somewhere between 3-7.

It's difficult to compare a center and a guard for ranking purposes. I didn't see Oscar Robertson play, so I'd put Kobe the #2 shooting guard behind Jordan. Older boomers might put Oscar 2.

I do not care much for Lebron but there is no arguing that he's been the best player ever for the longest period of time and when it's over I think most will have him ahead of Kobe and in the top 3.

But could Kobe do what some of the all time great big men did? Prototypical big men in previous eras took a beating night in and night out.

Not hating on Kobe, but it’s tough to assume he’s any better than a guy like Wilt.

like someone said a above, its tough to compare guards vs centers. But with me agreeing to that, im making myself look stupid for not saying top guards/wings of all time which I dont think anyone would argue Kobe isnt at least a top 3 wing of all time. I think Magic and Bird are 4 and 5.

Kobe was not a very efficient scorer. At his peak, his average stat line would be something like 12/30 for 32 points and 5 TOs.

And before someone says, “It was because everyone knew he was going to shoot it” Jordan and LeBron both took nearly as many shots while having a much higher effective FG percentage.

Kobe struggles to be Top 10, and is certainly not #3z
