In short, because he’s a poor man’s Cowherd.
His entire schtick is to feign objectivity with a slight contrarian lean but in reality he is just hardheaded, ultimately not that knowledgeable, and ends up sounding like he’s talking down to the audience. If you agree with his opinions you love him, if you don’t he’s an insufferable arse.

Hester and Hanny is the better show, but Matt is a close second. H & H actually get into the nuances of the game more, and having a former fan favorite NC Tiger and NFL player doing it helps a lot.

Because he’s an insufferable deeb, very full of himself, & has trouble with conversations that do not align with his own opinion (which makes for awkward radio)

Absolutely agree with this. His rants come across as fake.
I generally like his show and most of his regular guest .. Rohan, Russ Mitchell, the guys that cover the opposing teams, etc.

I think he is actually a good interviewer. His problem is he goes on and on about himself and spends a lot of time on stuff real sports fans don’t care about, although I don’t mind discussions of beer and whiskey.
