I'm guessing it's optional for everyone else and recommended/required for QBs. They wear them at a disproportionate level.
I was hoping someone may know officially whether it was a team policy or something with the individual players and their sponsorships.

Do they have deals with New Era or something?
Yes, the official hat sponsor of the NFL is New Era...even the beanies are made by New Era

Yeah I know, I meant to ask whether the QBs specifically are asked to wear them when not wearing a helmet.

So we're just doing offseason threads in the middle of the season now huh?

fricking bothers me I can't find an answer. Searched online and there are quite a few forums asking the same question, but the answers are all unsourced and just educated guesses.

It started with Elway, Marino and Kelly. Its a marketing thing. At one point it was those guys company, but I am sure it is now an NFL thing.

FWIW I agree with you OP. I’ve always wondered the same. Guys like Brady go straight to their hats on the sideline.
Has to be more than marketing. Maybe so they are easier to find? Maybe they are all just so used to it? It’s almost a guarantee for all QBs to have a hat on on the sidelines.
