Should Team A get credit for a top 5 win and get the playoff spot over Team B, even though they both beat Team C?

The main bozoo here says yes lol

So if I upset the #1 team in the country, I have to say I beat the #5 team the next day after the polls are released?

I remember back in 2024 when Georgia Tech and Boston College both earned wins over a Top 10 Florida State team that finished 2-10.

What if you play them in week 5 when they’re at full strength and ranked high….but later in the season, the team gets bit hard by the injury bug and loses a few?

Your week 5 win looks more impressive than someone else’s win in week 11 that came against a backup QB and with multiple other key players out with injuries

There's also the inverse- where instead of teams ending up being worse than expected, teams can also be better than their preseason expectations.

Say you play a random team out of conference, let's say Michigan State for example, and no one expects them to be any good and they start the season unranked. Your team beats them week one, but then they go on to go undefeated the rest of the season and finish 11-1 and ranked #4. Would you count that as a quality win at the end of the year or would you just say oh well no one thought Michigan State was any good at the time we played them so its still just a meaningless unranked win?

You haven’t made a single argument in your favor so far in this thread. You asked a question, posters have answered correctly and you’ve either insulted them or dismissed any point without providing anything to support it. You’re a clown, probably a Cheeto eating gooner who’s never participated in an athletic even in your life.

What entities are we even talking about “giving” this abstract “credit?” Fans? Who cares? The CFP Committee? They should use both as data points among several different criteria, and weigh each one how they see fit. Both rankings have merit. I agree that the final rankings should have more. But I don’t totally discount rankings at the time because teams change throughout the season. Some get better. Some get worse. Some drop off a cliff. Weigh it however you want.

It’s weird to me that nobody seems to be answering Olwie’s very obvious example. Even the Ohio State guys. There is a HUGE drop off from Sayin to their backup QB. If they lose to USC next week with the backup, does that make Texas’ win over them matter less? Should USC’s win matter as much?

And what if Ohio State loses to Oregon the next week, giving them 3 losses. And Jeremiah Smith opts out for the rest of the season. And the whole team just says “frick it” and mentally checks out. And they lose to Michigan and finish 8-4. Does that makes Texas’s win matter less? I would actually and argue “yes.” BUT, I would want the CFP to factor in that they were a much better team when fully healthy when UT beat them than they wound up. How much of a factor? No idea. Maybe very slight. But it should be a factor.

There’s all kinds of nuances. OP engaging only in binary, black and white, one or the other, no nuance type thinking is dumber than whatever abstract entity this thread is complaining about. What “people” is he even referring to? Do they even exist? And if they do, do they actually matter?

The explanation is pretty simple. If you pull up a team's schedule from the previous year, it gives you the ranking at the time of the game. The point you're making is valid, but these arguments aren't that serious that we should expect people to then cross check with end of season rankings. It's not that deep

I’d also make the argument that sometimes during the beginning of a season, a team might actually be playing like their lofty ranking, then eventually fall down the rankings as the season progresses and injuries take a hold of them… not gonna explain every case but you can definitely apply it to a lot of them

The context for using this is related to team changes that may occur. Suppose a team has a Heisman-caliber QB and a first-round WR when you play them early in the season. Then, in the next game, that QB gets hurt and is out for the rest of the season. Then, a few weeks later, the same happens to that WR. They may have been a legit top-10 team with those two players, but an unranked team without them,

Hopefully this will change when the first rankings come out. Should be a ranking based more off of strength of conference.

Do they realize this makes zero sense?

If it’s the current season, teams current ranking should be used.

If it’s in reference to a season already completed, the final rankings should absolutely be used when referencing games.
It's true.

The only quasi-legit counter-argument is that hype and perception matters at the time of the game. Like, you have to wonder if Auburn would have won had UGA been ranked much lower, as they might not have gotten as "up" for the game.

It's impossible to measure and all of your points still stand, though. It drives me crazy when people brag about "top ten wins" and then the team they beat is now not even in the top 25!
