Why do people think winning a championship means that's the best team?

I've heard several times on this site recently a lot of fools talking about how the tourney needs to be changed because it doesn't allow elite teams enough of a chance. That's utter bullshite. The champion is not the best, the champion is the winner pure or simple.

Because LSU football in 2007 was better than UGA.

I see where you're going with this but ughhhhhhh no. Every team has the same rules to be crowned the best at the end of the season.

As an LSU fan, I get it, '11 and all that. But no

That's the point. A team's best is subjective. You can only go by who won the games. If a mentally and physically handicapped team beat the 96 bulls, no one would consider them the best. But they'd still be champions.

So, in you're opinion, South Carolina who lost 11 games is the 3rd or 4th best team In the nation, but couldn't get better than 4th in their conference?

Or VCU was after making the Final Four after barely making it to the play in game?

It's a terrible way to determine a champion, and if they played 10 tourneys you would probably have a different winner every time.

why play the games if its just about subjectively deciding who the "best team" is

When it's single elimination and not a series, one rough shooting night and you're toast (Kansas).

In a series, the better team generally wins.

Well um if they beat them in a seven game series, I'd think they were the better team. And champions.

It's a bit different since you are playing a single elimination tournament.

Why does the champion have to be the best team?

If that's the case, why play the 30+ games before hand?

To put yourself in a better position to win the championship.

The best team has the best chance to win the championship, but the NCAA tournament is not set up to determine the best team. It's set up to determine a champion.

The tournament follows footballs model. It's not about who's the better team it's about who is better today. Also why its so popular.

Prove it on the field of play, chief.

By the standards of most people on this site, the only sports that crown a true champion are the sports that play a championship series.

I think most reasonable people are able to separate best team and champion. Sometimes they are one in the same, but not always.
