What's the team communication when people are yelling during free throws?

It's a weird connundrum in the brain...I don't know conditioned or whatever.

But it's real - you can have a crowd yelling at you - hell since Little League (hey batter, batter, swing batter, batter) and still lock in on the pitch.

You can have football fans screaming at you but when you run down that sideline attempting to catch a pass...it's silence. Total silence.

You toss a ball up to serve and somebody yells and it's a yip. Just ruined everything...

Same with shouting during someone's backswing off the tee.

They say hitting a fastball is the most difficult thing to do in sports...and yet you can yell at the batter all day.

While tossing a tennis ball for a serve is probably the easiest thing to do...and yet everything goes to hell if someone yells or makes a peep.

I guess it's just conditioning. You grow up playing baseball and football and people screaming and you grow up playing golf and tennis and demanding quiet. It's a self-imposed imprisonment.

You let your guard down during the toss up of a serve. It's the same with your backswing. Taunts are more effective because you're relaxed right before the real action takes place.

When you're hitting a fastball, catching a pass, or shooting a freethrow you're in attack mode. You're far less affected by outside noise.

There typically aren’t teams in golf. 99% of attendees are golf fans, not just [insert player’s name] fans. Taunting and harassing a golfer isn’t being a good fan, it’s just being a dick.

That's a very salient point.

You are in attack mode at the plate - locked in.

I played receiver in H.S. and it was like no sound. It was just the ball in the air...locked in...almost slow-mo.

But I did grow up playing tennis first. And your timing was all off if you tossed that ball and somebody yelled someting.

Maybe because we were just focusing on technique and perfect repitition? While football and baseball are never consistent.

And you're on red alert at the plate...or running a fly pattern.

While the serve is all loose and casual.

Part of the reason for that is because a 1% error in golf or tennis is magnified more than those other sports. You can be slightly off on a free throw and still rim it in. You flinch for a millisecond in a golf swing and the ball could go 20 yards out of bounds

But that still doesn't explain why we can't make noise during golf. It's all falls under the sorts umbrella. Are we trying to not consider good a sport?
When you're at a golf tournament, the spectators are extremely close to the players...three to four feet in some cases. You want to yell at them that close? You think that's acceptable?

There is no collective rooting interest, golf is a gentleman’s game where the crowd is try to see players do there best. It’s counterproductive to make it harder for players to play and also make their environment more difficult

What would you even be yelling at? What would be the point?

Yeah we were at the AT&T and standing literally 3 feet from Phil on the tee.

It would have been insane to have yelled at him.

That's a good argument compared to football and baseball - you are so removed from the action on the field.

But tennis you are pretty close and golf you can stand right next to the player during an important shot.

Show me a yelling fan who's 10 feet away from a free throw shooter, and I'll show you someone getting tackled, dragged off the court, and arrested.

One bad shot can mess up an entire round when a golfer is in contention to win millions of dollars.

Go out to your local course and try to hit a perfect shot with your buddy farting or cracking a joke right when your back swing starts. The results likely won't be good.

Those guys see that as their career and when some drunk arse hole yells during their swing to get a giggle from the crowd, I can understand why they would get pissed.

I’m not the one trying to equate basketball to golf, my point is they are quite different.

But anyway, during free throws teammates will be communicating, calling box outs, etc. Players talk on the floor the entire game.

I’m surprised at how much convincing you seem to need that golf is not like basketball or any other team sport that is played in a controlled arena. Every other sport also is built around scoring more, not less.

Every stroke matters in golf. It is a mental game, and yelling at people would inevitably cause some players to perform worse than others.

From a practical standpoint, you would likely try and heckle a good or well known player. You piss off a top player, he won’t be coming back and that tournament would suffer.

Now if you are asking why it was never acceptable, well it’s a gentleman’s game that has a ton of built in etiquette. It’s like asking why you are supposed to have manners at the dinner table...or any other social graces. You don’t have to follow the rules, but you would be considered uncivilized if you don’t.
