I may be completely off on this but they need someone smaller and faster to get downfield and make tackles...wouldn't do you any good to have a 300 lb center trying to tackle someone. Plus, don't they have rules about hitting the long snapper? Makes sense why they use someone smaller.

How often do u even see the long snapper actually making the tackle downfield?

You don't want the long snapper to get hurt. That would greatly affect punts and field goals.

I would try to protect him as much as possible.

I agree...surely FG kickers could squeeze in some time to learn how to punt or vice versa.

We used to use a receiver as the LS in high school. He was always right there when the return man caught the ball.

Like someone said, most punters can kick, but cant hit 80% of field goals.

Most kickers can punt, but cant put a ball inside the 10 like the punter does.

1 is better at kicking, another is better at punting.

How come some teams have kickers that kick off, and a diff player kick FGs?? Same reason. They are better at certain things.

But, if you can find a guy that can do 2/3 things like Morstead can, its very valuable. He saves a roster spot. He also gets paid, but still its very valuable.

And Gostkowski did boot that 1 in the game the other day, but after the play they showed him on the sidelines talking to someone and he said that was the best punt hes ever had in his life.

Im sure some kickers can connect on a punt a good bit, but not nearly as consistent as punters do. And vice versa.

It may be because the motions are so different.

Sometimes...but I see them around the ball all the time at least. My point is, would you rather a 300 lb center trying to make a tackle?

Koenen was for the Falcons a couple of years ago, but they picked up another kicker after his accuracy was terrible.

I remember when Nate Middleton was long snapper...smallest guy on the field

I'd bet there are plenty of soccer players in the Champions league who could both punt and kick very well with minimal training. Problem is, they aren't going to take a massive pay cut, and more importantly they aren't going to pass on the wild European model orgies. The latter a translation of a Adam PacMan Jones quote.

Punters and kickers aren't on the field at the same time unless the punter is holding for the kicker..but that's usually the backup qb or Tom Brady's job. SEE! Tom Brady can play qb and holder..goatest of goats
