re: Why can't Nebraska replicate the Osbourne success?

They can no longer pay Prop 48 kids from the ghettos of LA and Miami and have them just coast on through school. They also had to end their East German style steroid program.

Nebraska is sorta like Tennessee. 2 college football powers that have started to fade away. Nebraska ain't coming back. Let's see what Tennessee can do.

Never is a long time but Nebraska has more stacked against it than any other traditional Top 15 program.
I’d wager their biggest issues have been the elimination of proposition 48, the dissolution of the walk-on program, and county scholarship program. The rise of small FCS programs really siphoned off that talent.
Others have mentioned no longer having a TV advantage or strength and conditioning advantage. Those are huge as well.

the campus is probably good
Lincoln is a shite hole. Campus included. This coming from someone who has spent far too much work travel to there in the past few years

Nebraska doesn’t have a natural recruiting base. When Osbourne was there it was a National brand, they could recruit anywhere. 18 year kids today have no memory of Nebraska being a premier program.
It’s tough to sell Lincoln, Nebraska compared to a dozen other college campuses.
Texas recruiting. being in the big 8 put Nebraska on tv in the texas tv markets

There were zero Texas schools in the big 8.
I’d imagine all the Texas TVs tuned to the swc.

Depends on what you mean by coming back.
The solution I think for Nebraska is simple- go to the Big XII, offer to join if another team- Cincinnati, Colorado State or BYU is added with you in a new North division (not UCF because UCF would be a powerhouse in a P5)
Big XII North
Kansas State
Kansas
Iowa State
West Va
Colorado State
Nebraska
Nebraska could win that division regularly with just top 30 recruiting classes which they still pull. Maybe upset Oklahoma in the conference title a few times. If not, they still go to big bowls.
I don’t care where a program is. If you can get 80K+ fans to show and your program is one of the premier programs in its conference, you can be top 15. Winning a national title is another animal.

More emphasis on recruiting and Lincoln is a looong way away from any halfway decent talent pools.
That and rule changes regarding scholarships are the two biggest factors. There are others that had some effect, but those two put the nail in the coffin.

I like Lincoln...

By no means is it a great city, and my exposure is limited to CFB Saturday only, but it was clean, well laid-out, and had plenty of bars/restaurants.

Be a part of the Big-8.
Play an annual game against the OU the Ever-Over-Rated (knock on wood; they might actually bring a defense in 2021).
Enjoy a balanced, game rule set which inherently rewards defenses for aggression, initiative, strength and brutality by allowing defensive players to do their jobs.
Recruiting methods others mentioned.

All the things mentioned in this thread have contributed to their decline but one omission is the fact they had a legendary, visionary head coach in Osborne. They haven't had anything close to that since. Osborne, for all the hypocrisy he had with him, was a great head coach and developer of the talent he had.
A great coach on his level isn't even needed to be better than they are though. Iowa St and Minnesota are better programs than they are now and they aren't exactly in recruiting hotbeds. Nebraska has made bad hires chasing names. When Pelini is the best they've had since Tom that tells you something.
