Why aren't college sports looked at like an internship?

Advocates for paying college players say that they are taken advantage of and the colleges profit off of them. How is that different from people who intern for free? They make money for the company too. The reason people start out as interns is to pay their dues and gain experience to build their resume. Why isn't college looked at the same way?

Football: Are college players doing some kind of direct work for the NFL before they are eligible for the draft?

Basketball: Are college players doing some kind of direct work for the NBA before they are eligible for the draft?

Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

Because major college football and basketball players create a lot more revenue for the entity they work for than interns do.

Do you have to sit out a year if you want to transfer from Goldman Sachs to Citigroup?

No one is putting a gun to their head to play college ball. They can play overseas in the case of basketball, However, it usually ends up hurting their draft stock which is why it behooves them to play a year for the NCAA.

How much revenue does the average intern generate for his organization compared with the average college football athlete at a major program?

It hurt the guy picked by the Bucks and it will hurt Mudaiy. Also, college players are actually better off than interns. They atleast get food and a place to live. When I interned for free, I also went to college and worked to pay for food and rent.

i'm not watching LSU to see Maquedius Bain play... nor for that matter, Anthony Jennings. Very few college athletes actually generate revenue. the Bregmans, Fournettes of the world do. Everyone else is just needed to complete the team.
