exactly... it is an illusion of choice. there is really only one realistic option for the athletes: play in the NCAA under really shitty rules.
pretty close to 100% of the athletes disagree with the rules, but its not like any of them have any real say in the rules.
As an athlete... Once you have displayed that you have the talent to make it in the NFL/NBA, there isn't quite as much incentive to follow the rules anymore

But a 3rd string LT in the NFL might have dominated the likes of Alabama and LSU in college. At least he somewhat earned it. I just don't agree with paying some guy money that may have dominated some podunk high school in a small southern town last year because he was bigger than everyone else. It just gets watered down.
I do agree that they should get money from endorsements and stuff but paying the 3rd string kicker who never plays a snap? And if you only give it to players on scholarship then what about a sport like college baseball that only gives out 11.5 of them to the whole team? That doesn't seem fair either

But he would have still made one of 32 teams instead of 119 or however many are in FBS now

And those are the ones who should't complain about a free education, room and board, and meals. They are in many cases being paid more than they are worth.

And that right there is why paying players would fail. It would solve nothing because the big names will still feel underpaid. They should just let the elite players make money off their own likeness while in college.
