I'm thinking Verlander found a good topic for the MNRT. No way Hogan was the best wrestler, but he probably was the best entertainer or attraction of all time.

Ben Hogan, great as he was, doesn't sniff the OP's list...

only golfers who do are jack and tiger...

Ric Flair anyone? GOAT... Promos, longevity in the ring, championships (back when it meant something), ability to carry a damn broom (see Nikita Koloff) to a five star match.

Hogan had New York and MTV, I give him that. The biggest babyface attraction from 1983-1994. He had his four moves a la today's John Cena and was pushed towards the kids. His matches were terrible, had the same formula, hulk up and boom.

Flair was more popular with the adult crowd as a work rate champion due to his ability to wrestle 45 minute matches off the cuff in the ring seven days a week, twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday plus cut different promos and sell himself and the brand, In other words, today's terms, a C.M. Punk.

Hogan was prayers and vitamins and you know something brother.... Flair had more catch phrases than Ali and his Wooooo is recognized worldwide to this day in matches every time someone delivers a chop. Do people still do the ear thing like Hogan? Do people yelll brother? No. Years after Flair passes people will still Wooooo!

To show you how important and popular Flair was, even in New York among hardcore fans, when that idiot Jim Hurd stripped him of the WCW title and made him go to WWF in 91, Flair was working as a heel... They made the announcement at Meadowlands...

i know wrasslers are different breeds, but flair and hogan are somewhat tarnished by trying to hang on too long in the major promotions...

especially flair. his paunch in the final years of his career was sad to see. the role he's taken with the Miz lately, he should have took 15 years ago...

I don't think you can pick one for football. You can for some positions like we know Rice is the best WR and then you'd have a battle for QB with players like Montana, Unitas, etc and same for RB's with Brown, Sanders, etc. But no way can you just pick the 1 face of football.

Oh and GTFO with this Austin bullshite. Hogan brought wrestling into everyone's living rooms. He carried it for 2 different generations. I haven't watched that shite in years, but Hogan will always be remembered as the man. Flair is above Austin too.

Haven't read the whole thread, but I agree with this.

The best football players still only play half the game, either offense or defense. Most other sports you play both.

Also they are more dependent on the rest of the team for success on each season, each game, even each play than these other sports. In some sports you are the only person on the "team" and success is completely determined by you.

At best you can probably try to break it down to best at each position in football.

I hope you're being sarcastic...because otherwise, with this group think internet age - Rice is seriously becoming the most overrated/retro-hyped player in any sport.

Best receiver - sure he has the numbers, the rings and his QBs are in the Hall of Fame and one is the best ever...but that morphed into best football player ever - to best in any sport...to the GOAT of athletes among you 90's children for god's sake.

What else is there? 40 times and bench press reps? Compare his numbers to any other receiver that ever played the game. Anyone...he dwarfs them.
