Was this just a Big Ten rule or was this an NCAA rule?

I don't know all the parameters but the punishment was:

1st offense - Referee's Timeout
2nd offense - Referee's Timeout and captains warned and PA announcement to fans
3rd Offense - Timeout or 5 yard penalty charged to the home team
4th Offense - 5 yard penalty for each following infraction

What. The. frick. I vaguely remember this rule back in the day. I was watching highlights of Ohio State vs Notre Dame and they stopped play for noise.

I remember it well. It was an NCAA rule established because the offense couldn't hear snap counts in hostile environments. Dumbest rule ever made but thank God it didn't last long. It was pre-HUNH days.

I vaguely remember hearing about it now and then but can't think of any specific memories. It's mind boggling to imagine if that was still a rule

I think the celebration rule was worse, the one that took away Brad Wing's 50 yard touchdown run.

This was before my time but I couldn't imagine enjoying football if this rule were still in play.

It's why I have never been able to get into golf or tennis. The athletes complain at the slightest sound or camera flicker and it's just always rubbed me the wrong way.

It's happened several times at Sun Devil stadium Ol' Petey called our stadium one of the loudest he's ever been in

'07 is the last time I remember it occurring against Cal. Clear fumble that was overturned and the stadium went absolutely nuts. Second level floor was shaking from the noise, and soon thereafter we started breaking out in some profane chants... Ah, to be a student~

I thoroughly enjoyed the ending to that play

bullshite that the QB could just stand there until the crowd was quiet enough for him

Aiding the runner is an insanely retarded penalty

I have been to around 100 games there and I wouldn't describe it as one of the louder stadiums.

Beaver Stadium is the loudest I've been to, but I've never seen the refs tell the fans to keep the noise down
