Travel Board - Seeking Recommendations for Madison, WI

That link should help. In general, though, downtown Madison and campus are pretty intertwined. Everything is walking distance and State Street is what separates Capitol Square (and those bars, which are more young professionals) from campus (college bars, obviously). On gameday, add in Regent Street - a lot of bars have outdoor beer gardens, and that is where you'll want to be before the game. After the game is when you'll want to head back to bars on/around State Street and Capitol Square.

Pretty much all of this.

If you want to be in the thick of things, Jordan's Big 10 Pub and Lucky's are usually packed on game days and are a good time if you don't mind a crowd. That goes for pretty much anything on Regent Street.

A Kwik Trip at some point during your trip and get some glazers and a Cafe Karuba.

I think it's Buckingham's now. Another solid choice.

Wonder how the crowd will be... Student section is notoriously late, both because of partying and the process for getting them into the stands is embarrassingly bad. Anyway, crowd for first two games was top-notch. How Wisconsin dominated team stats and lost against Wazzu, though, was quite the gut punch. Wouldn't shock me if it took some time for the student section to fill this weekend.

In any case, enjoy the game! Camp Randall has a pretty unique setting as it stands in the middle of a neighborhood.

Make sure to grab a pitcher of Spotted Cow at the Terrace (Memorial Union along Lake Mendota, not Monona Terrace).

Agreed - probably best two spots on Regent for home games.

I love it when some people trot this out there. As if we're the only school where the students party before the game. Amazingly just about every other top tier B1G and SEC school's students find a way to be to the game at or near kickoff.

Getting them to their seats is a ridiculous process, but our student section has become one of the most overrated things in college football.

OP, it's very much a bars and house parties scene directly around the stadium as it's in the middle of a neighborhood. There is more traditional tailgating but it's down by the lakeshore lots.

If you hang around after the game for the 5th quarter it's fun to march with the band back towards state street as they play the whole way (drum line is awesome) and then you can just go to State Street Brats and grab a pitcher, then to Monday's to choke down the strongest mixed drink you'll get at a bar, followed by your own half pitcher at the Plaza. Frat/Sorority row is one block over on Langdon if you wanna check that out...nice walk.

I have nothing to add other than I was in Madison last weekend and it's an absolutely awesome city. I'd hate to be there in another month or so, but can't beat it in September.

We stayed where a lot of WSU fans were staying downtown. They were having a blast. Not so much the Wiscy travelers. 2 cases of Spotted Cow in the car home with me!

Madison is a great trip for a game.

The state stret area is definitely full of bars. Wandos is usually a giant party from the last few times.

Some stuff downtown I enjoyed was Great Dane brewpub.

Fun place. The old fashioned on the capital square has the best burgers in town. But both those places will be jammed on game weekend.

Forgot to mention to the OP...if you get in town Friday afternoon, take a walk through Library Mall over to the Memorial Union, and hit the Terrace for a beer or pitcher before starting your evening. The scenery (natural and otherwise) is fantastic, and its worth a stop. I spent many hours down there for group projects where the books never came out of our backpacks.

Trot what out there...? I wasn't even attempting to make an excuse. Lol. I, literally, said our student section is "notoriously late." Our students traditionally prefer the pregame over the game. shite, I prefer the pregame over the game. You couple late-arriving students with single-file herding in the concourse, and you get an absolute circus.

To the student section's credit, first two games have been great with attendance.

Can't be that crazy...? Wisconsin has won it's last two ranked games, which were to Iowa and Purdue.
