The game is so different.

How to compare Euroball to old American centers?

Which is why pundits resort to Analytics and Efficiency ratings...

Using baseball's endless efforts to compare eras with new metrics. Evaluate Joker by his peers and others in their time by their peers and ask who dominated their competition more?

The anti Wilt argument is a new phenomenon that popped up the same time Video game content creators and young former player podcasters like Arenas starting showing up on the scene. Before the last 4-5 years it was completely acceptable to say you thought Wilt was the #1 center of all time then some Gen Z nerdy white kids who stream themselves playing 2K and who have only ever watched YouTube highlights joined idiots like Gilbert Arenas saying he can’t be because of his competition level and people just went with it.

Yeah, cause every swinging dick back then could get 55 rebounds in a game

Half the guys Wilt played against had multiple jobs. Not sure that criteria tells us anything

He’s nowhere near as good as Shaq.

Well you see you’re dealing with stat dweebs so defense never enters their minds. Neither does actual basketball so Joker playing zero defense doesn’t matter because “muh stats”

His next best teammate is certainly nowhere near as good as Kobe.

Jokic might have won with the worst second best player on a team in nba history.

Irrelevant, it has no bearing on the individual player. And who was Hakeem’s 2nd best player on the 94 Rockets team? Mad Max, Kenny Smith? Neither player was as good as Murray.

He reminds me a ton of Moses, with a better feel.

I put him alongside Mo for that 4th or 5th best Center ever spot. The game has changed to really favor someone with his skill set, and Mo had more competition at his position at the time, but I won't quibble for anyone who wants to argue he edges Moses. I just don't see it quite yet. Another MVP or Finals appearance, and I probably flip on it as well.

You can’t compare Shaq’s league to Wilt’s league…

It kind of depends on how you’re framing the discussion. If you’re going by accolades + stats you might have a different top 3 than someone who values winning + accolades or winning + stats. Personally I try to evaluate them based on if I were choosing the player to be on my team. I try to evaluate their abilities, skill set + mindset but of course there is a threshold of success needed to qualify. I try to avoid the numerical ranking of Centers because guys like Tim Duncan and KG are seen as PFs to casual fans but played Center a lot and would’ve been strictly Centers in any other era besides the Shaq era. I consider Joker a great big who’s in the next group below the 3-4 greatest ever.

Championships matter when you are ranking all time greats, so a players running mate matters. No one puts Ewing ahead of Hakeem at this point. That has less to do with their individual careers and more to do with one 7 game series played on June 1994.

NBA history would be different if Pippen played his career with Reggie Miller and Jordan played with Rick Smits.

Jokic can do whatever he wants individually the rest of his career but few will rank him ahead of Shaq/kareem/duncan/Hakim if he finishes with just 1 career title.

Like I said that’s a different criteria that factors in a lot of things which aren’t specific to the individual players. It leads to speculation and double standard comparisons as well. I’m in no way trying to trivialize winning a championship, only that when you get into those discussions they tend to get twisted for the wrong reasons and it’s rare to engage with someone who’ll discuss it with proper context.

Yao Ming belongs on the list, certainly ahead of Ewing.
Also, for those of you who don't think Wilt should be # 1, the man had career stats of 30 /23. I'll say that again...30 /23 career. He had two season of 50/26 ,then 44/24. Just for fun, he led the league in assists p/ game one year.
Not sure how people are judging this - by pure talent, by NBA championships, etc. But to this day, Wilt is the most dominant player to ever step on the court.

I would love to see prime Hakeem vs prime Joker. Joker would struggle to stay with Hakeem.
