Jeff Ireland was one of the worst GMs I've ever seen, so I was skeptical when y'all got him, but maybe he'll continue to be successful there

GM, yes. Signing mike Wallace, hartline, trading vontae Davis, drafting dion Jordan, hiring philbin

Evaluating talent and drafting, not so much. He had some pretty good drafts with the Dolphins and as a scout with Dallas

If not for the dez Bryant and hard knocks stuff, no one would know who Ireland was. He'd just be a former GM turned player personnel guy

He's very overrated - The Saints are so undisciplined they waste two TOs by their 3rd offensive possession of each half - even with a veteran HOf QB who knows the offense inside and out.

Paytons clock management and strategy is fricking brutal easily bottom 10 in the league and it has been since 2013.

On top of all that he's arrogant and stubborn and will never change. Dallas seems like a fantastic fit for him.

His GM skills/talent evaluations have screwed him he's still a great coach IBO.

It's really shocking to me how many people still think this. he doesn't even fricking know how to call timeouts on the top side of the two minute warning when he's trailing late in the game.

Somebody earlier in the thread mentioned Mike McCarthy - McCarthy fricking sucks too. I don't know what planet you guys live on - Payton and McCarthy are routinely bailed out by their amazing quarterbacks. What game was it where Aaron Rodgers was openly questioning McCarthy's decision to not take a timeout on the top side of the two minute warning was that the Bears game ?

My seven-year-old nephew knows clock management better then Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy

You don't win a Super Bowl in New Orleans and be an overrated coach. His problem is they're terrible with selecting personnel and they've tried to hang on to the old guard for too long.

He must have cost you a lot of money over the last few seasons.

Yes I routinely bet on an overpriced team who can't play defense and whose coach I've consistently called overrated for 2.5 seasons

Bounty gate in 2012 killed a lot of momentum, but 2011 was arguably the best team in Saints history, and they were a play away from playing in a 3rd NFCCG under Sean Payton. 2013 was successful as well. Hard to call it disappointing

Don't forget when he broke his leg on the sideline.

I've read three pages of this, and not one mention of drew Brees' contract. That's what is killing the saints.

It's now ranked 9th for current QB contracts.

$44 million in dead money, bad drafting, and terrible FA (Byrd, Browner, Hawthorne) are killing the saints.

The uninformed point to Drew's contract

Of Drew Bree's 100 mil contract, you don't think that the 40 mil guaranteed is not hurting the saints???

I think it's fair market value for Brees. On the list of our issues, it isn't top 5

How did Denver build such a good team despite Manning having a bigger cap hit since 2012?

We have the most dead money in the league, by a lot.

Browner and Byrd have been phenomenal. Byrd being the highest paid safety in the league and all

Junior giving us a nice $12-14m cap hit next year too

He's a declining 36 year old.

He's got more guaranteed money than flacco and Russell Wilson who have both won Super Bowls since Bree's. More guaranteed money than Big Ben. Stop and think about that.

And Peyton's contract is 34 with 15 guaranteed.

He didnt sign his contract at 36. Guaranteed is meaningless at this point. It brings security to the player, and if you read the details it wasn't a truly guaranteed $40 million. Saints had the option to cut before each season. We were never going to cut him, so I'm not sure why you're obsessed with guaranteed money

Still ranked #6 in guaranteed money too.

Denver, since Manning signed in 2012, has spent more cap space on Manning than the Saints have so far on the Brees contract.

Yet they've built a complete team even without him being healthy

Junior Galette - $17+ million cap hit
Jahri Evans - $7 million this year, $8.2 next
Colston - $6.5 million
Byrd - $5.5 million
Hawthorne - $4 million
Ben Grubbs - $6 million hit
Curtis Lofton - $5 million hit
Browner $2.4m this year; $6.3 next

How many draft picks are still on the team from 2010-2014?

But you're right, that is all Drew's fault. It isn't his responsibility to manage the cap, and it isn't his fault the Saints have wasted so much space on bad players, or players that aren't on the team anymore.

Look for an extension this offseason
