Tyrann Mathieu not winning in '11. It's never been more clear who the best player in the country was. He had everything a defensive candidate could ask for. Great year by team, gamechanging plays as a defender, many quite amazing, big time punt returns, Heisman moments, a catchy nickname and cult following. No defensive player has a chance again.

Eric Crouch with his 1500 passing yds, 7 TDs and 10 Ints

He did run for 1100 yds with 18 TDs on 200+ attempts (5.5 yds/carry)

Rashan Salaam ran for 2000 yards for an 11-1 team who should have won? Of all the controversial Heismans, even in the 90s Torreta, Woodson, to single out Salaam and Eddie George

Kerry Collins and Ki-Jana Carter were better that year. Unfortunately, they took votes away from each other since they were on the same team.

To be fair, Charles Woodson wasn't a bad choice. It's not like Mark Ingram or anything. Dude played almost 20 years in the league, is a Hall of Famer, and potentially one of the all-time greats on defense.

1997 was one of the most staked final fours ever - Manning, Woodson, and Randy Moss. Ryan Leaf too but we’ll forget about that.

Crouch over Grossman was hugely egregious.

Define better. Salaam had 500 more yards but also 100 more carries. Carter had a better ypc at an insane 7.8 but Salaam was 6.9 also incredible but more carries. Different eta but Collins had 21 TD vs 24 for Salaam and 23 for Carter. I can see an argument for either of the Penn St guys but to Salaam was undeserving is absurd. Especially considering Torreta was just 2 years before

When coach put me on the offensive line instead of QB.

This. Woodson was good but the most overrated Heisman season ever.

Actually I thought Ryan Leaf should have won that year.

That has nothing to with his college career or his Heisman season.

Hard to believe now but back in 1985 it was literally a 50/50 chance between Bo Jackson and Chuck Long (Iowa QB) and nobody had any clue who would win.

The TV network (ESPN, CBS???) came up with the smart idea of letting the fans cast an unofficial vote by calling a 1-900 number that charged 99 cents a minute.

My idiot father ran up a $100+ phone bill calling the hotline all day to vote for Bo thinking the "phone vote" would sway undecided voters.

Bo ended up winning the closest vote margin ever (to Dad's delight) and Mom pitched a fit when the phone bill came a few weeks later.

so basically the bar was raised (greatest season ever) if you're not a top media darling team.

That’s fair though. You’re talking about the best player out of thousands in FBS… if you’re not leading your team to a lot of wins that’s what it should take

Gerhart. Went for 200 and 3 TDs plus 33 yards receiving and threw a TD pass in a win against ND in his last game.
