America the Beautiful. A 13-year old future astronaut in the stands went wild. And the dude standing on third base just wanted to play baseball.

When Apollo 11 landed on the moon, major league baseball stood still

Players and fans observe a moment of silent prayer July 20, 1969, at Yankee Stadium after the scoreboard flashed the news that astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong had safely landed on the moon. (Harry Harris/AP)

quote:

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

As the umpires, according to prior arrangements, waved their arms and stopped play, an urgent voice came over the radio: “Here is a bulletin from WWDC News, Apollo 11 is 100 feet from the surface of the moon. We now switch live to the manned spacecraft center.”

Fans at Philadelphia’s Connie Mack Stadium when the moon landing was announced…from the Philadelphia Inquirer of July 21, 1969

And a tremendous cheer drowned out the words “on the moon.”

The cheering continued for about 45 seconds. On the scoreboard, the message section read “They’re on the moon.” People stood. They waved the bats back and forth. Shepard kept talking, but his words could not be made out through the din.

On the field, the players seemed confused, or impatient. Most did not turn toward the scoreboard. Finally, the announcer could be understood, and he asked the crowd for a moment of silent prayer for the safe return of the astronauts.

The major league baseball games that were played while Apollo 11 landed on the moon

quote:

After the roughly four-minute stoppage, McMullen hit a grounder to third baseman Bobby Cox, who threw home to nail Epstein for the first out.

quote:

The Yankees will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing Saturday. Polansky, who lives in Houston, said the team invited him to participate in a pregame ceremony, but he will be on a previously planned European vacation with his wife and children.

Fellow former astronaut Mike Massimino will throw the ceremonial first pitch to Aker, who didn’t fully appreciate the magnitude of the event when he stood on the mound exactly 50 years ago.

Believe it or not, there was a time when almost all Americans were proud to be Americans.

Most still are. Don't let the media get to you, civil debate and agreed love of country are still things. Stop giving the idiots platforms.

I am saying it’s stupid to look back at the time of Vietnam and segregation as the good ole days when people love America

I know, right?

It's like movies....people think every movie from 50 years ago was great. That's because they don't show the shitty old movies any more?

I wonder if any socially aware players knelt in protest at the injustice shown by putting the Slavery Flag on the moon?

It is amazing to me how thick the rose-tinted glasses are that many people wear when waxing poetic about our nation's past. The vast majority of people are and were proud to be Americans but at the same time it doesn't mean the US is perfect and shouldn't strive to be better it is what we have been doing on the whole as a country for close to 250 years.

MLB should have planned better.

Have as many matchups as possible be the same as 7/20/69. Stop the game at the appropriate time. Give away a promotional item celebrating the moon landing.

Meh, the anti-war movement did not warp mainstream Americans' love for their country. Yes there were hippies doing nonviolent protests and stuff, but being a twat wasn't just tolerated or even celebrated like it is today baw.

I’m sure the African Americans being hosed in Birmingham & other minorities being oppressed back then would have joined in.
