By the "rarest athletic combination" definition the answer would be baseball. Either you have the arm and coordination to pitch or you don't.

No, that would be ice hockey.

I disagree, rookies make an impact at the NHL level straight out of the draft.

even the greatest baseball players need some time in the minors

While I might agree, a lot of it is training. There just is not many 7 foot guys, let alone athletic enough to play basketball.

So, your idea of athleticism is a sport which requires defined skill rather than innate ability?

yeah separating skill from athleticism is always the hallmark of these threads

baseball = skill-based

hockey = real skill based

I'm not exactly taking a stance, just because this argument is so subjective. "Athleticism" is not something that provides an objective definition; rather, it depends on how someone defines it.

The answer needs you to differentiate between skills and athleticism. Playing soccer and basketball are a more even combination of skill and athleticism whereas baseball is weighted more towards skill. Most football positions require more athleticism than skill (QB being more balanced).

Here we go with these arbitrary labels. Hockey isn't anymore skill based than Basketball or Football or anything else

I'd say Basketball requires the most. Baseball doesn't require the same athleticism across the board, but certain persons do. Baseball is probably the hardest of the mainstream American sports to master.

Yea, no. I played for 10 years competitively and was nowhere near the NHL. Skating is very difficult and very tiring. In fact, a lot of players get lessons from figure skaters to master edging. It takes quite awhile to learn.

I am actually arguing which sport requires the most training, if you look at the post I replied to.

baseball requires more training than hockey.

I think hockey players are more athletic than baseball players overall

it's not arbitrary

skills and athleticism are 2 separate concepts

bullshite

skating, puck handling, shooting are skills. there is athleticism involved for sure, but i doubt hockey players would perform well in physical-only testing. plus hockey has a lot of goons
