This is a yes/no question.
i already said it's 1 of 2 for hitters, i try to stay away from hyperbole when possible

To get the most overratted stat in baseball I go to the most highly rated stat the Homerun.

we could all say saves or wins is the most overrated, then there would be no discussion. I think strikeouts are probably in the top 2 or 3 most overrated stat. That, however is irrelevant to the discussion.
You still havent convinced me that it isnt an overrated stat
The question isn't WHETHER it's overrated. The question is whether it's the MOST overrated.
You claim that it is. Because you made this claim, the burden of proof is yours. Thus, YOU must demonstrate that a batter's strikeout tally is the MOST overrated statistic in all of baseball.

However, do you believe that counting the number of strikeouts that a player amasses is overrated to the point that it is the most overrated stat in baseball?
No, but I never said it was. Besides, it was a ncie jumping off point for an interesting discussion. I don't think strikeouts are good, but I don't believe they are a special kind of bad out. Outs are outs. The productive out is vastly overrated because its trying to make a bad at bat good (occassionaly, it is good, like a sac fly to score a run, but its rarely as good as a hit)

yes.
The number of wins can tell me more about a pitcher, on average, than the number of SO can tell me about a hitter, on average.
Thank you for bringing logic and reason to the board. You're actually defending your position, which is what you're supposed to do.

Also this is a subjective argument so we can quit acting like there is a definite answer

Read the thread topic. If you want to avoid hyperbole, then avoid threads that ask a question that is hyperbole.
In the meantime, if you are answering the question, then answer it truthfully. It's a yes/no question. Do you believe that the strikeout is the most overrated stat in baseball?

. But that does not mean hitters that strike out a lot are usually not good hitters
Is English not your first language? Never once have i said that hitters that strikeout a lot are automatically bad hitters.
I said
quote:
Hitters that strike out a lot are usually a less disciplined hitter
Please note, a less disciplined hitter does not in any way mean not a good hitter or for that matter not a good offensive player.
Just to clear things up: I am not in any way suggesting that strike outs by a hitter is an important stat or one that can be used by itself to evaluate whether a hitter is good or not. It is, however, no where close to being the most over rated stat in baseball. For starters, to be the most over rated, it would have to be considered a very important stat, which it is not. Saves, wins, BA, RBI's are considered important stats, all are over rated.

I'm just trying to get people to use logic on here (i.e., I'm jousting at windmills). Pilot was jumping on all sorts of tangents instead of demonstrating his statement that the K is the most overrated stat.
I happen to agree that it's overrated, but not that it's THE most overrated.
Posted on 8/20/09 at 9:19 am to Sophandros
I will give wins some credit because if we are talking "overrated" then a pitchers wins gets more media time than a batters strikeouts.

Like i said i don't know the rankings, but it's irrelvant for sure and the only reason it wouldn't be the most overrated is b/c i think it's become pretty well accepted that they don't make a difference. Since people still put so much stock into wins, saves and BA I'll have to list those above K's
Saves may be the most, just ask the Mets and K-Rod

Not looking for a definitive answer; rather, I would like to see a solid argument that supports whichever claim using logic, reason, and evidence.

But now you're changing the scenario
my original comment was that the only only thing worse than strike out a hitter can do is ground into a DP.

ALL OUTS are bad. Some are worse than others
that was my point.

K's by themselves only tell you a part of the story. When compared to the amount of walks a batter also gets, it starts to paint a better picture of the batter's discipline. Scouts often look at a hitter's K to walk ratio when comparing prospects.
Still not the most overated stat though.

A guy who doesn't walk, that's an undisciplined hitter and strikeout totals give us NO insight into whether a guy walks or not
fair point, K's by themselves do not tell you that, you are correct. Most of the time guys that draw lots walks do not strike out a lot. That's really the angle i was looking at. There are always excpetions of course and many power hitters get more intentional walks, which does not mean he is a disciplined hitter.
Again, i'm not saying strike outs are an important stat just that it has or can have some value in context with other stats.

Not the end.
You claimed that it is THE MOST OVERRATED STAT.
You have yet to defend that claim.

well i don't think its viewed as important enough to be considered over rated and its no where near the most over rated stat.
