For me, it is the distance runs of 5000 and 10000 meters.

Endurance, speed, tactics, mental toughness.

And probably drugs.

Probably something shorter than that... 5 and 10k drags. I like the 800 myself

400m...all out sprint, endurance and strategy. It separates the men from the boys.

Meh tactics, it's still about the fastest...and isn't all that much endurance. Anybody can sprint till their heart bleeds in the 400...and there's no strategy...it's just a longated 200 sprint.

10,000 is garbage...it's all slow-paced tactic bullshite. Playing Possumm jamming people blocking intentionally slowing the race.

Steve Prefontaine was right when he said, nobody cares about the 5,000 or 10,000. They care about the mile.

The Mile it is.

Not at all pacing is a must in the 400 there are not many athletes in the world that can run at litteral full sprint for that long

If you're quoting Pre, I assume you're old school. I ran the 1/2 mile, mile, 2 mile, 5k and 10k. To me, the hardest race the 1/2 mile. Running qtr intervals always kicked my arse. As a spectator, I enjoy the 400m most of all.

4 x 100
4 x 400

Easily

Individual is the 800 as it's become like the 400 of years past

Then why did we run a full sprint in H.S.?

All those world class athletes did.

Sure we died at the end...but they can run the full sprint...with just a little taken off to cruise down the backstretch - that's not remotely tactics like the Mile or the 10,000. It's too short of race, it's won in like 44 seconds. Nobody is jogging at WC level in any part of the 400...they are busting their arse.

I ran the 400 in H.S. - the only thing tactical about it is to judge that brief window between dying and making it across the finish line.

WC people go all out with a little breathing-breezing down the backstretch to manage peak endurance.

But don't act like there is tactical strategy...managing your wind isn't tactical like the bullshite 10,000 which is all head games.

5000. The 1500 and 10000 can also be great. David Rudisha is making the 800 great to watch as well.

About to hit the road for the first XC meet of the year.

I can't believe no one has said the 4x400 relay.

Its just long enough - not a blink-and-you-miss it event. It has the strategy and chaos of a relay, and, often, the best runners in the meet all in one race.

That's the event most spectators at a meet are waiting to see.
