re: What is a scenario(s) that keeps 13-0 Wisconsin out of the playoff?

we saw this scenario when FSU was 13-0 but squeaked by against a weak schedule
that was the Baylor/TCU year so it was easier to keep them both out

The Big 10 got 3 bowl teams in 2015.
Ole Miss was a 9 win team.
SEC could get 3 teams in this season especially with how close the Cotton Bowl is to LA. They would want to sell tickets and know LSU fans would show up.
7 spots outside of the playoff and the group of 5 representative.
Assuming the playoff is SEC Champ, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Big 12 champ.
Miami
Big Ten champ (maybe Ohio State)
Wisconsin when they likely lose Big Ten Champ game
TCU
Oklahoma State
Pac 12 champ
SEC runner up
That's your seven. Not to mention a 10-2 Washington has a good shot at the Fiesta Bowl if they were to lose to Southern Cal in the Pac 12 Championship Game. Penn State finishes 10-2 they'd be a big draw in a NY6 game.
9-3 LSU wouldn't be ranked very high. We'd need lots of other chaos, IMO.

Really not sure how you can leave out Clemson if they've got wins over a 2-loss Miami team, 2-loss Virginia Tech team, NC State, Auburn, and a conference championship. How is that resume worse than Alabama's, for instance?

Yeah, Clemson is in if they win out.
1-loss Clemson and Notre Dame are both ahead of Wisconsin. That wouldn't be who Wisconsin would be fighting it out against.
Keep in mind that 1-loss Alabama and 1-loss Oregon were both ahead of undefeated Florida State in the first ever college football playoff, so that's not without precedent.

If Clemson wins out, they are in without a doubt. The team that has to be fearful would be the SEC championship loser. I just don't see the SEC championship loser making it in over an undefeated B1G championship winner.
Now, if Wisconsin were to lose to Michigan this week, but still get a victory over Ohio St in the championship. They are out of the playoffs no questions asked.

there's a huge difference between an undefeated P5 conference winner being #3 and #5
the first rule of the committee should be if you win a P5 conference and go undefeated, you're in, no questions asked. you did everything asked of you
one loss is an excuse to keep you out

All of this. I think Clemson's loss is terrible, but probably happened early enough in the year.
There is no scenario whatsoever in my mind that a 1 loss Wisconsin gets in.

Ok to be fair here... you really think Wisky goes unbeaten in the Big12, or SEC or ACC , or even the PAC 12???????

If they don't lose, how do we know they wouldn't?

OU has a home loss to a 3 loss at the least iowa st team. that's not a good loss. clones could have 4 losses by seasons end
lets also add, iowa st had to have their linebacker take over at qb in that game, and he led them to the win.

Don't even care about the CFP right now. I'm more worried that Wisconsin doesn't even make it out of this weekend unscathed.
- Iowa is a quality team that dismantled Ohio State and took Penn State down to the, literal, last second.
- It's a rivalry game and Iowa's QB is a Wisconsin native that wasn't targeted by Gary Andersen and his staff. Only when Paul Chryst came in did Wisconsin extend an offer. It was too late.
- Quintez Cephus and Jazz Peavy are out. They are, far and away, the best to WRs that Wisconsin has. Will put an awful lot of pressure on Jonathan Taylor and the OL to produce at an extremely high-level against a stout Iowa D.
- Neither Iowa or Wisconsin have protected home field against one another in recent years.
- Weather not looking great (freezing rain in the morning, rain in the afternoon) and Wisconsin has had its share of issues with penalties and fumbles.
- Wisconsin is down to T.J. Edwards and Ryan Connelly at ILB. Jack Cichy tore his ACL in August and Chris Orr went down last week at Indiana. Connelly and Edwards are capable of starting nearly anywhere, but Wisconsin is screwed if either goes down.
This is going to be an ugly game for both offenses.

SEC West or PAC 12 South? Yeah, it could happen.

there is only really one timeline of events that keeps wisconsin out of the playoffs at 13-0
Sec champ
11-1 notre dame
12-1 acc champ, clemson
12-1 big 12 champ
the rest of this thread is a waste of time

If Georgia and Alabama both enter the SEC Title game undefeated...
They're both getting in...making it the most pointless game.
It would be poetic justice if Bama wins the SECCG and loses the rematch.

Wisconsin at 8 this week.
Booger says 7-2 Auburn controls their destiny more than Wisconsin.

A Notre Dame loss would help Wisconsin a TON.
Then it boils down to:
Alabama / Georgia winner
Miami / Clemson winner
2 spots left for:
Undefeated Wisconsin
Oklahoma / TCU or Washington or 1 loss SEC loser
I will be rooting for Miami and TCU and Michigan State and Auburn and Miss State this weekend. Northwestern and Michigan winning will help slightly.
Never thought Wisconsin football would have a 10 page thread on tiger droppings.
What a time to be alive!

What if Oklahoma wins out?
ND wins out...and Georgia's only loss is to Alabama?
Since Georgia is #1 in the committees eyes, I'm sure if Bama loses to Georgia in the SEC title game...Bama drops to #4 but is in.
The top 4 has really become incestuous...and circular logic...I'm great because I only lost to you, etc. And you're great because you beat me, etc.
If Bama whips Georgia they are probably out...Georgia has to win or keep it real close. Bama just has to keep it close against Georgia to still be in...they have it rigged to a degree based on pedigree.
Clemson has the champ benefit of the doubt.
It's all about #4. If Mayfield wins the Heisman and Oklahoma wins out, I can see the Sooners in over Clemson.
