What if MLB required a starting pitcher to complete 5 innings?

I know it’ll never happen but it could be a way to force these teams to go away from all these bullpen starts or “tandem” starts where they plan on a starter only going 2-3 innings

There would be a lot of arm "injuries" and probably some arm injuries.

Youd have a lot of guys "feeling a soreness" to get pulled when they dont have it that day.

So if a guy gives up 10 runs in 3 innings keep him in?

You’d have starters basically forced to throw 120-130+ pitches in starts as well. I don’t think teams would be enthusiastic about putting young pitchers into that atmosphere

Ultimately teams would just find their way around it though anyway

Yes

So a dude who is getting shelled and has thrown 90 pitches through 3 just stays in and injures himself in a game that is already over?

In order to qualify for win it should be 5
Then when they start losing incentives for number of wins

I prefer the infielders must not be past the infield dirt headed towards outfield grass, I'm ok with shifts as long as the infielders remain on the infield

Starters already have to go 5 to get a win.

One of the minor leagues will have an experimental rule this season requiring all infielders to have both feet on the infield dirt when the ball is pitched.

it's more likely that pitching wins, losses, holds, and saves cease to be official stats... those are team stats

They'd move the pitcher to RF since they can't pull them and move the RF to the mound to lob meatballs until they get through 5. It would be a farce of the rest of a game.

Or they put in a RP to play RF and then switch positions so the starting pitcher completes 5 innings, just not on the mound.

Either way it's dumb.

No dumber than requiring a minimum number of batters.

I don't disagree but that wasn't the question.

What does that hurt if the pitching changes are made between innings? It only slows the game down when a lefty comes in to get one out and then a new pitcher is brought in the very next batter.

Most of the rules designed to save time end up not saving much time at all and just aggravate baseball fans. Maybe just leave the damn game alone. If a person doesn't have the attention span to watch a game, maybe they just don't like baseball

Would you be ok with a rule that allows a team to reset the lineup every inning? It’s not like people watch Lakers games to watch KCP shoot as much as Lebron.

Not that I would be 100 percent for it, but it’s fun to think about.
