What Happened to NASCAR?? (Spinoff Thread)

I remember 15 years ago, shortly after Dale Earnhardt died, NASCAR was arguably the second most popular spectator sport behind football in America. It certainly was in the South. It had transitioned from a "redneck" thing to mainstream. Guys like Dale Earnhardt, Jr and others had endorsement deals that made NASCAR drivers household names.
However, over the last 6-8 years, it seems like nobody watches and nobody cares anymore. I can't think of a single thing that can be pointed to as to why, or when, the downturn was triggered. Too much Jimmie Johnson? Did the Chase turn people off? I'm one of those fans that grew disinterested and I can't even say why. It just happened.

Yep, nobody watches and no one cares. Good call
I've been a fan for 15 years and my interest in it has done nothing but increase

I feel the same way. I watch at least a bit of every race that I can. Helps that Junior hasn't been a big dumpster fire for me though. I still get excited for almost all the races

I used to watch pretty religiously, but after JJ kept winning everything, I lost interest. I don't even watch anymore.

I think it's the most watched sport behind football and baseball.

It got to be monotonous. No real rivalry to speak of. Jimmie's dominance, the chase format, and increasing ticket prices led to its demise.

I just can't watch cars go in a circle. I know it is much more nuanced and competitive than that and I'm not disparaging it at all. I just can't watch it for more than 3-5 min.

My interest in it has never diminished. But little France Jr who is in charge right now is changing it to suit his wants, not the fans.

I stopped watching with the introduction of restrictor plates and crap like making all the cars the fricking same. This was a real race car.

The real reason for restrictor plates was to make Chevrolet competitive on the super speedway tracks.
They could not compete with the big block Fords and Chryslers. Safety was a good excuse after a couple famous big time wrecks, but not the real reason.
From the time they started slowing the cars down, the sport has gotten worse and worse. The object of racing is to go as fast as you can, not to all run around at the same speed and wait on a big crash to determine the winner. Sad what has happened to the sport. I used to watch every race and attend at least one a year, now I watch Daytona, Indy and the last race of the year to see who wins the championship, which is also a joke under the new rules.

People realized that driving in circles is dumb.

The Chase is probably the best thing NASCAR has done. I guess it worked well enough for Golf to incorporate it.

The original Chase was great. This new version with knockouts, I'm still not sure of. My interest in watching has gone down, but that's more a result of where I am in life with young kids and doing more family stuff on sunday afternoons. I'll still sit down and watch part of a race, but not like I used to. It also hurts that they're shown on 93 different channels throughout the season, and without cable, I'm not jumping through hoops if it isn't on a broadcast network.

NASCAR fricked over Gordon from winning 1 or 2 more titles.

Constant rule changes. I remember probably 12 years ago they created a rule to not allow drivers to pass on the apron because it was unsafe. Its like they were purposely trying to make it boring. That was the last straw for me. The chase. Then changing the rules for the chase every year to help dale jr. have a chance. The influx of boring, unlikable drivers. Adding cookie cutter 1.5 mile racetracks in places like chicago, kansas city, etc.bwhich just watered down the product even more with boring races. The biggest reason of all though is nascar getting too corporate and doing everything they could to distance themselves from the southern redneck reputation. They said F U to the people who made them so big in the first place.

Why downvote an honest and respectful opinion?

This guy on the other hand.....
As for me, I like NASCAR. I record every race and fast forward through commercials and sometimes segments of the race depending on time and circumstances.
I like the chase. Just like a 10-6 wildcard team can win the Super Bowl, anyone can win once the Chase starts.
Do those that hate the chase hate the NFL playoffs?
Used to be a huge baseball fan. Gigantic borefest now. People and things change.
