Three pages in and the obvious choice isn’t here. It’s Urban Meyer.

He was. Funny how Saban bowed out when NIL became a thing.

I believe Saban bailed out due to one of the bi products, unintended consequences if you will from NIL. Roster depth. How did he stay on top for so long? He had multiple 5 stars at every position. The back up was as good as the starter. Kids waited their turn because they wanted to play for “Alabama and Saban”. In today’s landscape, they don’t give a damn about the name on the jersey. If they are good, they are not going to be a back up, they simply go to the portal and go where they can get paid. It’s that simple. Saban saw that and said I’m out of here like a fat kid in dodgeball game.

Florida was one of the first college football programs to spend big money. They would have done well.

Now days, all these coaches have their own plane for recruiting . In the early 90's in the SEC, I think UF was the first to do this and spend the money.

Especially both the OL's and the DL's. They had guys wait til their senior year to start, and were good enough to also make All SEC their senior year.

What coach from the past operating with NIL of today would own college football ?

I think it’s going to be harder for anyone to own it, but I think coaches who genuinely just embrace the system and are good X’s and O’s guys will thrive.

Coaches who are control freaks (Saban) or deep down wish it were all still about “turning boys into men” (Dabo) will struggle. Or maybe not necessarily “struggle” but not win like they used to.

I think coaches who have a style that fits the NFL will do better. Coaches who are all about winning and don’t give a shite about guys getting degrees, etc., and are used to dealing with players with big contracts and more power than they have.

I think prime Pete Carroll would be good in today’s game. Barry Switzer would do well. Jimmy Johnson.

Guys like Bryant, Osborne, Stallings, Paterno… maybe not so much.

Saban failed in the NFL

No, he didn't. The Dolphins' front office failed him.

Yea, I mentioned him earlier. I almost feel bad for the guys who were busted back in the day. Sherril was a terrific coach.
