Judge’s frick up is inexcusable

Everything was inexcusable that inning
The play at first was actually the 5TH out of the inning.

This is from the first inning. Coles reaction was totally different here. This is how it should be and the out is made. Dosen't matter if he thought Rizzo was going to make the out or not, his job is to be there.

The point was that Cole had no interest in getting to the bag.
The ball is already in Rizzo's glove at this point. Pitcher should have been nearing the dirt by now for a flip. Believe Treinen had a very similar play against Soto in the 8th. He beat Soto to the bag as he should. Cole was never running that 60 ft.

Cole should absolutely have still covered
And in that play in the 8th Soto was BARELY out by a step. Betts would beat Cole to the bag. The only chance of an out is for Rizzo to come play the slow grounder like he did in the first

He needed to come up and more aggressively field the ball

They both were at fault. Both of them didn't do things they've been taught since they were kids.
The pitcher has to cover first and the first baseman has to charge a slow grounder. If either one of them does their job like they were supposed to, it's an out.

Was one of them charged with the error at 1b,?

No. Was considered a hit.

I'll give Rizzo a bit of a break there. The ball was hit off the end of the bat and had a lot of spin on it. You can see Rizzo overrun it a bit because of the spin. He's played 1B a long time. You know when a ground ball could be funky, so I think he was being overly cautious in making sure he fielded it cleanly.
Now, if he breaks for 1B immediately upon grabbing it he likely beats Betts there by a step. However, I suspect with it being a (somewhat) slow ground ball he assumed while he was tracking it Cole was going to be coming to first. That's why there was a lack of urgency and when he realized Cole wasn't there. That hesitation was enough to allow Betts to beat him to the bag...even if Rizzo tried to get there.

Judge should look on the bright side. Even Babe Ruth made a boneheaded play to end a WS by getting thrown out at 2nd.

I mean it was an honest mistake. All Star Curt Flood slipped in center to give the Tigers multiple runs in Game 7 1968.
shite happens sometimes. Cole, otoh, may wanna get way on a Southwest Airlines flight for awhile.

Now that's a name I haven't heard in a while.

It reminded me of Chuck Knoblauch’s gaffe against Cleveland in the 1998 ALCS. The Post had the words blauch head in bold letters on the front page the following day. Fortunately for him, the Yankees were great enough to overcome it.

particularly liked how Cole casually pointed to 1st base while halfway to the bag like he was asking "You got that-----right"? While Rizzo was 20 ft. behind the base fielding the ball and in no way going to get there in time.
