Saturday Down South

I have been echoing this sentiment ever since the playoff was founded, but not as eloquently. If the playoff is expanded, college regular season begins to die

Edit: Sorry I’m a ruhtard

Did you forget something? Or is this thread the "well written piece"?

Tell that to a potential 13-0 Big Ten Champ Wisconsin who may be on the outside looking in.

I think it should stay at 4 as well.

The last month of the season is a playoff.

If you go to 8 or 16 teams then you are talking about 3/4 loss teams having a shot. I think it would water it down too much.

The only thing you could talk me into would be 6 teams with the top 2 teams getting a bye.

This because I like the truly great seasons being rewarded somehow. Otherwise keep it at 4. Don't need a bunch of teams with good ,not great seasons getting in.

Disagreed with the article as soon as I got to this.
quote:

The limited postseason pushes urgency and enormous stakes into many weeks of college football. Contrast that with the NFL game where six teams from each conference make the playoffs. That’s 12 teams out of the 32 teams in the league. Or, 37.5 percent of the total teams. Nearly 40 percent of the teams make the playoffs. No wonder the regular season is crap.

Even if you allowed 10 teams into the playoff, that's only 7.9% of the FBS field and would clearly consist of the best teams in the country.

I don't agree at all that 4 is the right number and moreso I absolutely hate the selection committee. The criteria to get in changes every single year based on what's convenient for them. Frankly, I'm more tired of conference championships basically meaning nothing anymore. Which is funny considering the big argument is that every game matters.
Last year the Big10 championship didn't matter.
Just last week before Auburn beat GA, the SEC championship wasn't going to matter because both Bama/GA would get in regardless of who loses.

The "eye test" has ruined the authenticity of the selection process. Look at Clemson who lost to Syracuse. They didn't even drop out of the playoff top 4. Are you kidding me when there's still an undefeated Miami/Wisconsin? Stop giving "great teams" mulligans just because subjectively people think they're still the better team. The result on the field has to matter.

In a perfect world we have a 6 team playoff with each P5 conference champ and one at large. Top two teams get byes. There'd be 4 playoff games and you'd rotate between the 6 bowl sites.

So many fan bases check out of football once we hit week 7-8. There would be More interest and better ratings for the back end of season if expansion occurred.

Indeed. The vast majority of games from the beginning of the season are basically irrelevant when the G5 is out by default and the P5 plays a lot of games vs. FCS schools. Do out of the blue upsets happen sometimes? Sure, but it's very rare.

Why do you say this? Doesn't the final 4 picks happen after the conference championship games?

Two ways to fix the playoff system,

1) Only conference champions get in

OR

2) Remove conference title games

I would say instead of eliminating why not consider having the actual 2 best teams in each conference meet in the championship game as opposed to divided by divisions. You're then essentially creating a defacto extra round of playoff games.

So 5 teams get in?

Would the conferences be content with this? I'm sure that is a lot of revenue they are removing...

This is nothing new. A conference championship was never a prerequisite to win the title, and it's not like that in any major American sport either.

I submit that NFL’s popularity has been inflated in recent years, buoyed by mass interest in fantasy football, and to a lesser degree, gambling. Now that fantasy football is steadily on the decline, so is viewership. Ever consider why the NFL Red Zone channel became popular? It’s 100 percent fantasy driven. Also notice how there’s no Red Zone channel for college football?

the only reason there isn't a RZ channel for CFB is b/c there is no single provider of on demand games for every game like with the NFL

After what we saw this weekend, I doubt very seriously that an undefeated B1G champ is at home watching this year.

The playoff has to change, in one way or another.

When you go into a year, there is the chance that 6 teams are undefeated at the end of the year from the Power 5 and independents (more if you want to include BYU). It has never happened, and may never happen, but why would anyone ANYONE believe this is a good way to crown a champion, when the best team may not even make the playoffs if there are 4 other undefeateds.

I am fine leaving it at 4, but then you better drop this down to 4 conferences and make ND and other independents join into a conference.

I have advocated 4 16 team conferences with "conference" finals in week 13 as the CCGs are now Then you in essence have an 8 team playoff, but there is no chance for two teams from the same conference to get in. People can crow all they want about "best" four teams, but if you have a neutral site conference title game and you lose it, you aren't the best team, the end

They already have a foot in the door. We'll see 32 team playoffs before it's all said and done.
